Our new Ring Neck Pheasant

Here is my project pheasant. he looks pretty bad. I didn't thik he would look this bad....Oh well. I am going to do weekly pics of him. If you can't tell he has very short tail feathers and he has like all his feathers missing on back.

So here is Pheasant on Day 1...

poor boy, it looks like he was at the wrong end of that fight. they are pretty tough though, and he should make a full recovery.

Just thought I would update on our Pheasant. He sure is a pretty bird now! And we now have a total of 18 pheasant. 9 roosters and 9 hens. Just about time to start taking them to the hunting preserve. I would like to go through winter with half that many if not a few less. We are thinking about keeping 2 Rooster and 4-5 hens. We will see. First picture is of this same rooster:

The rest are just some of his buddies. They are in a much larger enclosure now. We built a nice flight pen for them:

We are in MI. No real wild pheasant here. Well not near me anyway. And the ones that are out there are few and far between. So we have to work on pen raised pheasant. I wish we had wild!

He sure did bloom into a beautiful bird. So did you have a successful mating or did you purchase more birds?

We did have a nice hatch of baby birds this year. But a storm early in the year whiped them out. A friend of mine raises game birds for a living so I bought some young ones (3 week olds) from him and raised them. Those are the ones that are in the pictures as his buddies. The are about 4-5 months old now.

Bet right now they are going to stay as close as they can with hunting season started. I think it has been two years since my brother shot an albino. Was he ever pretty! He took him to a taxidermist.

The Ringneck Pheasant is SD's state bird for those who didn't know.
