Our First Calf!

This is our first calf ever! He's about 2 weeks old now. These pics are from when he first came here. I have a couple questions. His stools were runny yesterday so I put an egg in his milk replacer. I was told that should make them harder. Is that right? I'm not suspecting scours yet but want him to stay healthy. Also, he's been in a stall for two weeks so yesterday, I let him out in a separate paddock from the herd of horses. He was in with the 39 yo mare who babysat him. Is that okay? He seemed to like being outside. It was sunny and 55 degrees, warmer than in the barn with concrete walls, which stays colder during the day.

What a cutie! You are so lucky! I don't get my calf for another 2 weeks. And I can't wait! I like that color.

Very cute. I've never heard of putting an egg in the milk to bind a calf, but I do it with the dogs, so can't see any reason why not. Are you offering hom hay yet? He should be starting to eat some solids, and that will help him out as well.

He is far better off outside rather than in the barn IMO, and if the mare is happy to baby sit it sounds ideal.

Good luck with him.

I am going to get some calf starter today. He nibbled at the hay outside. He looks really skinny to me but I was told that's normal. I know he can have problems if overfed. He gets two 2 qt bottles a day of milk replacer plus I give him some water in a bottle as he won't drink out of a bucket yet.

My calves didn't take in a full bottle per feeding until they were close to a hundred pounds. I was told to put instant mashed potatoes in the calves bottle to help bind them. I liked to give mine electrolytes with beneficial bacteria, I found that to help. I'm guessing that I'm looking at a 70 to 80 lb calf.

He sure is cute!

I have never had cows before, but hubby grew up on a dairy farm and says they gave the calves eggs to bond up the diarrhea. If it worked 30 some years ago, it should probably work for you cutie pie.
