Hey again,

I have a 7 month old stud colt aptly named Rowdy who is a bit of a handful lol.
The first week I owned him I swore I was selling him, but now his stubborness has grown on me and I actually quite like him.
His biggest problem is kicking at people, last week while leaving the pasture he came galloping up behind me and cut me off with his ears pinned and let out a good kick that ended up bruising me above my knee.
I think he feels like I am a playmate maybe? He tends to do the whole head tossing, excited hopping around thing like he is playing but honestly I don't find it very fun .
Plus when kids come over to see the horses I have to watch him like a hawk because he'll try to boot someone.
I got him outta the biting phase thank goodness, but the kicking is a huge issue. I've been told if he swings his bum kick him in the butt first, then he'll think you kicked him and your the boss horse, tried that and I think it ony aggravates him....I've also tied him and worked on handling his legs and picking his feet and he is o well behaved when haltered that I never have a problem.
Only when he is loose.
So what are your tricks to stop this bad habit?
He will be getting gelded come spring, but in the mean time he needs to learn manners because one day he is going to be my cart horse.

getting weight on the topline?

Ok so she's not a mini...she's a 10 hand shetland~but I have to buy mini halters and being as she's smaller there is less I can do as opposed to my 15.2 walker so thought I'd ask here.

I'd like to beef her up on the topline area. She's 5. I've had her a year almost. Seems all the weight she gains is in the belly. I don't think she's wormy-she's been wormed regularly and rotated. She is a leaner built (modern?) built shetland as opposed to the round furball ones most of us started on:).

I have a call into to the dentist to have her (and her sister's) teeth floated but any other suggestions?

Could I be feeding to much and not enough exercise? Any specfic things you feed to build the topline not just the belly? What about excersise? What do you do to keep you little ones in shape?

I have started her lunging-she is broke to ride. She's doing decent on the line but we're still working at voice commands and such. She's a smart little whipper and picks things up pretty fast.

I'd love to hear your advice!

I would really like to start halter breaking the 2 little minis I rescued. How do I best go about this. I'm totally new to horses & could use any/all advice. Should I separate the mare & her colt? The colt is about 14 months old & she's the one I want to halter break so I can lead her around the farm. She's still skittish & will barely come close enough to smell my hand. Will occassionally take a treat but not often. The mare will usually take a treat and then there's Matty. She acts like a dog. If I let them out of the pen I had them in she followed me every where. We just finished fencing their new pasture this weekend. I still haven't introduced them to the 2 original minis except through the fence. Want to wait until I know they are healthy & won't spread something to Briar Rose & Cotton. I know this is long but it's an update as well as a new question. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I have been lurking for quite some time and decided to introduce myself.

I have been around horses all my life, but due to medical issues sold my big horse this spring and down sized to minis.
Long story short, I purchased a weanling filly this summer that is having some issues. When we picked her up she looked 'normal'.
She was perky, good body weight, a little unhandled but not a big deal.
We brought her home and she started to rapidly lose her perkiness, I wrote it off as weanling depression and figured she'd sort it out.
Well 2 months went by and though she is growing taller, she is not gaining weight and looks awful. She is now cow hocked not sure if this is because of the lack of weight in her rear end or not, and is very lethargic.
2 weeks ago I drove her into the vet. They did all the blood work and nothing came back. She said 1 of her liver enzymes was a bit high but nothing to cause concern, she was stumped.
We weighed her and she is only 37kgs, vet said on a scale of 1-9 (9 being fat) she was a 2. I could have cried.
So while I was relieved that nothing serious was found to be wrong with her, I am still left with no answers.

Anybody know why a mini cannot gain weight?
The vet told me to do everything I have been told not to do with minis lol, and let her eat her little heart out.
So 2-3 times a day she is seperated from the herd and given a 16% ration for weanlings, mixed with a touch of oats. Also gave her a B12 shot to boost her.
She seems to be a little better, and I can see some weight coming on her hind end, and she is a bit more responsive.

I don't know what to think of this.
The herd lets her eat so it's not that she's not getting enough feed.
I even thought the hay we first had (grass blend) was maybe not good quality, but tell that to my mares with their round hay bellies , I don't stall these horses, they have shelters to go into and I free feed them during the colder months...pasture them all summer. Not show horses or anything just pets.

I have tried to add pics but it's taking forever and wanting me to resize them. Sigh. Maybe another day.
They have a mineral block and salt block too....free choice.
Any ideas? Anyone? I am still learning so am open to suggestions here.

I took in a rescue tonight. A mini mare and her baby. The little foal was born in June of this year...very cute.
The mare in age Unknown, Im guessing 10-13 trs.
I have some concerns and I need your help.... The little foal looks as though she has loose stool. Its on her tail. Looks fairly loose.
The mare has major issues with her hooves. They look like elf feet, on all four.
Apparently she has been like this for years. She is supposed to be trimmed every 8 weeks, but they grow this way (thats what they told me)
Is this true, they will never be normal again? Have you heard of this?
I had to work late tonight so I will get pics and post them tomorrow.

Thank you
