The films are on a link to my facebook...PLEASE take a look if you are familiar with it. The 2nd vet is a lameness specialist...keep in mind this same horse had a hoof infection in his heels during this same time causing him to be ouchy it was a nasty infection, his heels are still soft, its take so long for them to toughen up so he still gets ouchy, just looking for other opinions and advice!

Info on Club foot?

Does anyone have any good resources on club feet? Things such as managing a club foot, limitations, what types of injuries a horse with a club foot is more at risk of, and so on.

This particular club foot is something the horse was born with; his pasturn bones all line up with even joint spacing, so he is at his "natural" angle. He is 7.

The foot is not "dished" like some club feet, but is quite upright with a very deep heel.

I don't want to post the photos/x-rays until I know what is happening with this horse. Just looking for as much info as possible to help with the decision making process.

I pulled Otto's front shoes off last week, and put his Easy Boots on to trail ride on Sunday. The boots used to fit great when Otto had shoes on. But since I was able to get them on WAY too easily, I knew they were too big and might come off. But then they stayed on, on the tightest latch, and things were fine. We went through deep mud, and then they were gone. I couldn't find them, so I need new ones.

I searched for some old posts about different opinions- does anyone have anything new to offer?

I have a 14.3 Haflinger who is primarily in dressage, but we ride trails maybe once a week (nothing longer than 5 miles or so), and I'm looking at:

1. Cavallo
2. Renegades
3. maybe Boas (not sure- don't know anything about them)

Any help would be great! Thanks-:)

If you haven't followed my bouts with navicular, Mac has pretty bad changes to his left front navicular bone including two large cysts in his bone :(...

If you haven't followed my bouts with navicular, Mac has pretty bad changes to his left front navicular bone including two large cysts in his bone :( . Nerve block improved 80% in the heel, but had to move up to the fetlock to make him completely sound. Well I have him lots of time off, did injections to his coffin and navicular bursa as well as gave him Recovery EQ HA... and nothing. I would say he is about a Grade 3 lame. Not obvious when he walks, but as soon as he trots you know.

Here is the link to my other thread w/his xrays :http://forum.horsetopia.com/hoof-tal...ys-bottom.html

Funny thing is this horse has great hooves for a qh, he stands very upright, has pretty good sized heels... But still lame.

Before we go to the extreme with nerving we are going to give tildren a shot. So he goes in, 9:30 for a regional profusion of tildren (instead of going through the whole body it will be concentrated down the hoof).

I am thinking about maybe doing a journal to see if he improves, like every 15 days maybe? I am going to try and stick him on a lunge line and get video this morning before we leave.

Wish us luck it works, otherwise nerving is the next option :(.

ETA:
Here is a video of him today. Sorry for the bad video, my camera battery went dead and I can't find the charger.

I am going to go ahead an update for today on my OP so everyone else who reads this knows what is going on.

It went really well at the vet's office. They used a mild sedative, blocked his leg, and put a turnicate around his cannon bone to cut the blood supply off to his leg. Then they put in a butterfly cath around the fetlock and injectected 2 doses of tildren (suspended in a salineish soln.). Then they let the tildren "soak" in the hoof for 20. Removed the cath and turnicate, wrapped his leg and once he was alert we were done. I was VERY surprised at the cost, about $350 for everything.

I was told to give him 30 days off. IF (and that's an IF) he improves, we should see improvement at 30 days or beyond. This is an IF because tildren will only affect the bone, if he has soft tissue damage it won't do a thing. A navicular horse is a catagory that you can break down. Some horses have pain assoiciated with tendeons, ligaments, the navicular bursa, cartilage, or the bone. Mac showed no improvement with the strongest injections available so chances are it is not soft tissue. We'll see.

We also discussed other things we could do. The vet said to wait and see if he shows any improvement in 30 days. If he does, we may want to try adequan (which I will). But like the vet said, if he doesn't improve with tildren it's likely nothing else will help.

If this helps, we will have to do it again in 6-8 months. However, vet said he doesn't know if I have to continue that for the rest of his life, there just hasn't been enough research to know. Although he says the european docs think that you have to do regional profusions continuously.

So... we wait 30 days.

I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what shoe this is...

An individual was describing a shoe to me today that is aluminum, somewhat wide, and had a groove on the hoof side of the shoe that I believe the wall sits in. It is supposed to provide support to the hoof wall.

Does anyone have ANY idea what I'm trying to describe third hand and better yet, have a photo? (even better, not only have a photo but firsthand experience with this shoe?)

Thanks in advance....

Is there a thread on here somewhere regarding how to know when to shoe your horse?

I know this is silly but im serioiusly wondering!

I am mostly concerned with it NOW because I ride ALOT more than I used to (I made local riding buddies YAY!)

My mare has fantastic feet. She is appaloosa so I guess I have good jeans to thank for that! I only shoe her when going to the mountains. She doesnt show any signs of discomfort and hooves dont crack or chip at all. Most of our riding is done on trails and at a walk. My ferrier says she doesnt need shoes, but I would like to know the facts for my own piece of mind. She is trimmed every 6 weeks and ferrier always says her feet are good. He is a natural hoof person (ya know, the ones who do the barefoot trims) I personally did not like the idea of it and never allowed him to do that to my horses.

One more thing, since I have your attention  When I bought my mare as a 3 yr old, she had been started as two year old and the old owner basically ran her every where they went! My mare is TINY 15.1 and the girl who had had "trained" her was not small. I have been dealing with the gaps and bad habits in her training from this since day one. Now I am concerned about how this could have affected her physically.

The girl did not get xrays on the mares knees or a vets approval before starting her on such strenuose activities. I fear her knees where not "closed". The mare is now 6 and the vet has deemed her healthy never had lame day in her life. Should I be concerned about my mares future health? Is there anything I can do besides "wait and see"?

Has anyone ever dealt with this situation?
Red got injured last week on a trail ride and has been terribly lame since.
I had been in communication with the vet immediately afterwards and as per his instructions,
we were treating it like it was a stifle injury,
given that Red wasn't bearing any weight on the entire leg, and holding it off the ground,
essentially not using it at all.
As well, he has been on Bute 2x per day since.
Finally got the vet out to have a look today and we ruled out hip, hock, and stifle, he feels it is in the foot (as the foot is quite warm) and he believes Red broke his coffin bone.
Does anyone have any experiences with this??
If so, I would love to hear any and all information.
Thank you ;)

Well, after a lot of work, my dad has discovered that our pump doesn't work at the barn where we are currently keeping our horses. Since we don't have a lot of funds at the moment, my dad wants to move the horses up to the barn by our house. The problem is, the run-in there was made for cows. Therefore, has cement floor.

The horses would still be able to get outside whenever they pleased and we would put straw down for them so that they aren't laying on cement. We would also feed their hay outside to make them get out off of the cement. But is this ok for them to do? I know that cement can be hard on their feet, and I don't want to have to put them on cement this winter if their feet won't be able to take it. If we absolutely have to, we are going to build another lean to but would prefer not to because of financial reasons.

What do you guys think? Will they be ok?

My last horse foundered and had rotated. My vet had me switch to oats. and bute for a couple of weeks.
My friends small horse has heaves and has foundered. Her vet says that the oats have to much starch. I thought oats were low in starch. I told her that i thought pelleted food like Senior feed was good but it was to high also and that being a pellet wasnt good for heaves. She took her mineral block away also . Said that protein wasnt good for founder. Never heard that. If you have to soak hay for heaves , how do you do it in the winter? also he told her to give bute for a few weeks. I told her no way would i give my horse bute for more than 2 and low dose. It can cause ulcers.
Is there any good grain that is not to high in starches or fat? Would appriciate all the help i can get. thanks
