 A little background -- we are leasing a pasture from an elderly lady who has chickens that are not penned up. Needless to say, every day when we go to feed our horses, the chickens come running. They aggravate the horses because they want to eat with them, too. (At home, the horses are fed in troughs, but at the leased pasture we feed them in shallow buckets on the ground.) Anyway, yesterday my husband and my daughter went to feed, and here comes the chickens. While my family were trying to shoo them away so that the horses could eat in peace, my husband's foot (accidently, I can assure you) connected with one of them.

My daughter, who plans to be a vet (14YO right now) immediately assessed the situation and determined the chicken has a broken leg (and possibly internal bleeding, etc. She tends to be a BIT dramatic). My husband let her bring the chicken home, and we put her in our hay barn for the night. At bedtime, Mrs. Cluckers (yes, she now has a name ) had eaten her food and bedded down for the night.

Mrs. Cluckers made it through the night fine, and at last report, was hopping all over the yard.

Now for my question...has anyone ever had a chicken with a broken leg? My husband felt bad, and was going to kill the chicken right then, but my daughter had a fit. I am wondering about how to take care of it. We have horses, dogs, and cats, but this is my first chicken!

But I thought these pics were pretty cool.

John and I were laughing at Jim when he said that he'd seen vultures circling in one of our fields this started last year, but this summer we had to stop laughing and start believing when we saw this

Then we found that we had two of them, and they had babies. Now for some of you guys turkey vultures are real common, but for us incomers from the UK it's like WOW, turns out that they are rare here, rare enough that the bird conservancy people wanted to ring the babies, so they sent the 'raptor wrangler' (isn't that a great job title) out and we went and tagged them.

Even though the little beasts used both lines of defence on us, trying to vomit horrible smelly stuff over you, and then playing dead, I really though I'd killed mine, it was a rare honor for me to be able to help out.

I got my friend a dwarf rabbit for her birthday. She loves animals, but is timid when it comes to things that tiny. But this little cutie is perfect for her! She's so calm and gentle, just loves to cuddle. And my friend loves her. She was a bit scared of her in the beginning, but has deffinatly warmed up to her.

So, here's DubChubb (named after our favorite fast food Double Cheesse burger from McDonalds). Any tips for her? How big should she get? The guy I got her from said about 3 or 4 pounds? Also, how do I find out if she is actually a he? haha
(Sorry the pictures are so poor, I need to get some new ones with my camera and not my phone.:o)

I went to see the horses tonight and there were these women driving up at the same time, saying that they always pick up the pecans out of Uncle T's pasture and just want to check the trees. Okay--I kinda vaguely remember him saying something about that, and he isn't anywhere to be seen, so I make the call to let them in as long as I'm there. So I tell them to give me just a few minutes to put up the animals. I get the horses put up and the goats---all except our one super friendly, super sweet nanny, Mary.

I figure Mary will be wherever I am. NOT. She sees new people and has to go say hi. I see her right before I hear the screaming.

I kid you not--these grown women are SCREAMING and flailing their arms and running to the car away from a little goat.

It was all I could do not to fall on the ground laughing.

I'm still giggling over it--but I didn't let them see me laugh.

At the beginning of Sept my 13 year old became the proud owner of Mr T, a tri coloured male GP. I have to say I'm impressed with his disposition and the amount of interaction/attention he requests (the GP, not the boy:D)
Anyway, when we first saw him in the store he was easily picked up, now it's like a rodeo to corner him and get a hold on him. We've always been very gentle and each time he's picked up he gets a food treat (boy are they food motivated!) Did we rush this too much or is there something else we're doing wrong? Mr.T will let me rub his nose and feet through the cage bars and is very vocal when he wants food. He's fine once you have picked him up and will cuddle on your chest (or in my son's case somewhere inside his hoodie)
Any suggestions?

For anyone that wants a laugh...this is a pic of my husband and a pet deer that runs around our neighborhood.....We've been out in this area for a year now and I had heard rumors about him but hadn't seen him till about three months ago....he wears a red collar too so no trigger-crazy hunter shoots him either. Now he's adopted us and won't leave the pasture... His best-friend now is my 6 month old brama bull :-)

Adding more to the menagerie... this is Stevie. She was purchased from Petco on 9-23 for $167 including some toys no cage. I have the receipts showing what she paid! She has been listed on Craig's list 3 times since than. The first was 10-4 just a few short days after she arrived to her new home. Stevie was born 7-12 she is descented and spayed. We bought her today for $75 that included a small cage and all the accessories. Madison instantly talked me into a Ferret Hotel!
Anyway this is Stevie and what you can see of her Ferret Nation model 142 cage.

I haven't been posting much these days, but there's a reason!

I got guinea pigs! :p:p

Not the most exciting pet, I thought, but I can't have dogs here and my boyfriend has a nasty allergy to cats, so we settled for his favorite childhood pet. He's built a cage for them that spans a large chunk of my living room

These things are an absolute riot. Every night around 7pm they go crazy and gallop around their cage. Often they'll do it in a single file lineup :laughing6:

My only complaint is that they have figured out that their dinner comes from the fridge, and now whenever you even go near it they start squealing. They're like the ultimate miniature horse in a way ;)

Without further ado here are the little fiends:

Seth Rogen the red-eyed rex

Jay Sherman the sheltie mix

and Cosmo Kramer the abyssinian :D

They all have weird names, it's what I do. Jay so far has cost us about $430, his own price and vet bills included  apparently you don't get a discount if the thing only weighs half a pound :laughing6:
