Inter-collegiate Competition?

I was talking to a girl on campus today, and she mentioned the school's equestrian team. I was really surprised to find that the school pays for EVERYTHING (show costs, show clothes, boots, helmets, travel costs, etc!) and she said they usually take everyone and anyone. (They like to compete at all levels to get more points)

So, I'm wondering, has anyone ever competed. It would be intercollegiate Horse Show Association. I've been riding for only two years, but I can walk, trot, and canter. I've even done some small (under 2ft) jumps.

I've never shown before. Think it's a good idea?

Showmanship lessons question, mainly for 4-H parents

Not sure where to post this, thought about in the training section, but figured that was only for horses and not for people. So since it does have to do with showing stuff (not sure how many people practice showmanship at home if they never plan to show it)

I have begun thinking about leaving the job I am at so that I can do more stuff with the horses. In order to do that I have to replace my income. Growing up my mom paid for us to take showmanship lessons one day a week for an hour from another local lady that was an advisor in one of the 4-H clubs. This was probably 10-15 yrs ago when we started, and we paid her $5 per lesson. She would do a group of students at a time, sometimes as many as 12 of us, sometimes as few as 4.

With her assistance back then my sister and I became quite good in showmanship. Winning most of the time, or at least coming in the top three in payback classes against adults and people from the AQHA circuit.

She would occasionally host showmanship clinics as well that were free to attend (I think, memory not so good on some of the financial aspects). While watching her at one of her clinics it gave me information to train my mare myself how to do showmanship. She will pivot on either the left or the right hind foot with a very slight change in the lead rope position, we do not use a chain on her, just a snap. She sets up automatically basically, she backs instantly. I can do patterns with her without a lead if I want to. This year I added in the 90 degree pull turn as we heard they are asking for that at shows now.

I trained her 10 yrs ago, she had 9 yrs off, and we decided my niece would use her this year in 4-H. With a couple days of tune-up by me, and then working with my niece with her she now has over 15 ApHC showmanship points (in only a few shows, many with only 3-6 in the class), and my niece won one of her showmanship classes at her 4-H show and was 2nd in the other.

With that I know that the knowledge I have is still relevant in the showring, and have thought about one way to boost the income from whatever new job I have could be through showmanship lessons. One problem if I begin to get paid for lessons I can no longer show as a Non-Pro on the ApHC circuit. They do not have Open showmanship classes (not sure if any breed does), so I would not be able to showcase my skills that way to draw in more potential students. So everything would be based off the results my students earned.

How much would you pay for your 4-H member to take showmanship lessons? Is $10 per person in a group setting be an ok amount, or would that be considered too high for a group setting. How much would you pay for a week or two weeks depending on the horse to learn showmanship?

All the tweeking has been done and this is what we got. Still a bit long but for 3 horses, it is appropriate at just over 7 minutes. That is just over 2 min.s per horse :) This is a test link and will have a permanent link once put straight to our youtube account. But in the meantime, we are ready to share even MORE moving pics of a couple of HG Esquire+ kids. There is video of Sly (SUPER SUPER AMMY) available :)

Does anyone know the number of horses at Congress

I'm trying to make some comparisons between the breeds. Does anyone know the number of horses that went to AQHA Congress, or that are at AQHA World right now. Also, what about APHA World. The ApHC World had between 850-950 horses.

I'm also confused with the AQHA. They had the Bayer Select World show earlier this year, now they are doing another World Show. Plus they had Congress just a few weeks ago. What are the differences in the shows?

I have heard in the past Quarter Horse Congress has 3,000-4,000 horses there. That is only 4-5 times the number of horses that ApHC World had, which considering the AQHA has registered over 20 times the number of horses as the ApHC has for the past 4 years according to information Eastowest provided in another thread shows a greater percentage of ApHC foals making it to the World show at some point in their lives.

If the ApHC registered 5390 animals in 2008 (most are weanlings, but some were older or even hardshipped in as geldings or spayed mares), at the ApHC World show there were between 75-100 yearlings in the show, so the overall number is still quite low for the percentage of yearlings that were brought up. I couldn't get a solid idea on the number of yearlings shown as some were shown in open, non-pro, and hunter in hand. Others were only showed in one category. I came up with 83 counting the highest number between open and non-pro and adding the number for hunter in hand to it.

Sunshine was perfect, I could not ask for a better pony! Grace got a 2nd in equitation, I was so happy for her.

As a couple of you know, we had a Horse Trial show yesterday.

There were 7 in my division, we did Advanced green since it was my youngsters 1st time doing all 3 events and.... He placed 1st! No jump faults, 2 flying lead changes in Stadium (we've been working on it but he hasn't been picking up on it as quickly), 4 flying lead changes out in Cross-country. He never looked at anything, flinched, stopped or refused.

He is a superstar! He's 6 and we've been doing Hunters and doing well, but figured we'd try our hand at this. I am so proud of him, I always am proud of my 'horses' when they do well with me or their owners (of course).

No pictures unfortunately, everyone videod instead.

Just wanted to share since I am still in shock lol. :laughing6:

Right. Like you all didn't know I love mah horsie.

But you know what? He keeps making me so proud of him...

We showed today. I wasn't sure I was going to make it, but I needed to spend the day with friends and horses, so I decided what the heck...

It was an out of my area show. 45 minute trailer ride, all day at the show, and then a 45 minute ride home...but we did it.

We did showmanship (I did everything backwards. Tango was great, I sucked.) and took third (there were only three in the class. ROFL).

Then Tango had a hissy fit, broke his reins, spilled coffee on me, and copped an attitude. I handed him to one of the "Dads" at ringside, and took off my boots; found another set of reins, and sat down and 'recouped' myself.

Tacked the big ol' boy up, and we went into the warm up arena. This time, no shenanigans...utterly, totally listening, no anxiety, no upset...just a horse and rider, warming up. There was a 2'9" jump, and Tango kept eyeballing it. I got my trainer up onto him, she took him over it, and he clonked his hooves on it...but the pole stayed right there. I was so very proud of Tangoman...that's the highest he's ever gone. But we weren't showing jumping, we were in the flat classes.

The jumping went on for about forever...so we got some pizza and chips and salads, and had lunch. Tango was standing so nicely; every once in a while would poke his head around the trailer, note where I was, and go back to his lunch.

Then...tacked him up again, and went off to show. First class, we placed 4 out of 6. The only reason we placed so high was the other two were very illbehaved. But hey, I'll take it. Tango is not used to that many horses...the next class, there were 9 people. And we took 4th again. YAY us - we actually beat some folks...I didn't see them do anything wrong, but I'm pretty sure they must've, 'cause we were on the wrong lead once...

Took him in for the next class, and we got bunched up in a group. I did everything I could think of to get away from them, but just as I got into the clear, they asked for a reverse...and I was bunched in again. Sigh. But still, Tango handled it well. I have to learn how to do this spacing thing better, though...

Took him into the next class, whispered to him "get the right lead or no carrots for you!" and voila, he got the right lead. 'Course, the fact that I managed to get him set up well and cued before he was cantering helped. LOL...

We took blue this time!

Then we went and did another class...this time, I forgot to threaten the carrots...we went the entire circumference of the arena on the wrong lead; he never broke into a trot, and I couldn't get him to switch. I know that it was my riding, so I can't really blame Tangoman...we took 5 out of 5.

But I managed to get all my diagonals...never once missed it. Tango was having a ball; he does enjoy this stuff, I think.

Like I said, I was going into two more classes, but a young girl's horse spooked badly at the shadows, and she hit hard and knocked herself out briefly. I went over and helped until the ambulance got there, and then I just wasn't in the mood. Besides, Tango had been taken back to the trailer, and had gotten his carrots...so we packed up and came home.

Overall, besides looking startlingly, frighteninly like TweedleDee, I think we did all right. I took some hints and got my hair in two nets and a bow, and Tango had a different style of braiding. I didn't do such a good job on that - it fell apart after the 4th class - but still, it was braided better than before. I still look like a fat toad, but hey, at least I'm out there, and we're doing it...just don't ask me what was going on with my collar...I had no idea it was winging around behind me like that. And, above all, I learned a ton, Tango got exposed to a lot, and we didn't get hurt...and even managed a blue in there, too.
