Hey,
We have 9 laying hens. We got them this spring....they started laying late this summer and now that it has gotten colder it seems they have stopped laying all together. Do chickens stop laying if it gets to cold? They have a insulated coop with nesting boxes full of straw. why would they all of a sudden stop laying? What are some reasons why they would stop laying? Just some info/insight would be helpful. Thanks in advance

OK, I'm pretty new to the whole goat thing. I give them their shots as vet recommended and worm them, other than that, they're pets and a great form of entertainment and weed control. Up until a few months ago, I just had one. I got him when he was ~6 months old he's now 3 yrs, but he was banded at a very young age. Then I got GiGi who had just had a kid, Midori.

Midori is now 3 months old (time to wean?), but last week, I noticed Jager, the male, trying to...well....do the deed. :o GiGi was just walking around wagging her tail at him  and didn't seem to bothered by this. He was being mean to Midori, the baby, rutting her and she was pretty upset by all of this. I know he can't 'get the job done' but is that normal for goats?

I was telling my boyfriend saying, well, horses don't do that! and he kept saying "well, they're not horses!"

Should I be concerned for the goats? It's kind of embarassing seeing this go on...hopefully the neighbors don't notice. :laughing6: I'm thinking that when Midori get's older he'll start with her too.

How often do goats cycle?

This hen has to be the worst first time mother I've ever dealt with! They all seem to have trouble the first time round but man is she no end of trouble!

First off, she had around 15 eggs...only hatched 2!

Secondly, several of them nearly made it out of the egg when she abandoned the nest, leaving them to freeze. She'd then set the nest again till more began to hatch & do the same thing.

Third, one of the 2 that did hatch, died...don't know why.

Lastly, & this one is bizarre (& kinda gross too:o). She must have pooed on the remaining chick while setting on him &, when the poo dried, it "super glued" him to her backside:eek:. She was walking around with the poor baby stuck to her like it was in one of those baby nap sacks. I pulled it off but it couldn't move & wasn't even peeping. I took it in the house to warm it up but fully expected it to die as it was soooo far gone. Luckily, & miraculously, it survived but man oh man is this hen driving me up the wall!

Just had to vent it all out!

The Silky rooster appears to believe he's a hen.

He "broods". If one of the hens lays an egg on the ground, he'll set it!

He's also taken to rearing the chicks. Now we've had roosters who will stick with a hen & her chicks during the day when they're outside & even allow one or two of the chicks to roost under their wings at night; but this guy takes all of the chicks at night! Mom goes up to roost & he stays down with the little ones. Is this a Silky trait or is he just holding out for the daddy-of-the-year award:laughing6:?

Hello. I have a horned hereford heifer that is about a year old. Maybe a little older. Anyways, her horns are growing straight out of her head on either side. I would like to turn them a little bit. Mostly to make it easier for her to get through a chute when we work the cows. My question is has anyone used horn weights before? I have been looking into them but there are three different weights and im not sure which ones to go with. Also, im not really sure how long to leave them on or anything of the sort. So has anyone used them before? If so, can you tell me a little about them? Thanks guys!

So i'm new to this kidding thing. Got a doe a coupe months back. Prior owners claimed they did their vacs in August (although you never can tell). Anywho if you have read my past threads she is "supposed" to be due beginning of November. I just recently read that does need to be vaccinated 3-4 weeks prior to kidding. If she is truely preggers my 3-4 week range is past can I still vaccinate with CD/T or do I wait until (or if) she kids? Or would she even need it again if she just had them in August? Help please my time fram is ticking away.
