Closet bay

This is what lurks in the depths of every grey horse's secret fantasies... They are all 'closet bay'!

YES, he had just been groomed, and did not have a single stray hair on him. And then I kindly turned out him to pasture, to enjoy a little rare cool sunshine while I did his stall. I never saw that tiny patch of mud - but apparently, Dot did. And he made the most of it, as you can see! That horse has bay-dar And look how pleased with himself he is!

Needless to say, a good bath followed

GBar, His Royal Bay Fluffiness must have told you to say that

I just love the look on his face in this picture, though... pure contentment!

If you forget that it's actually mud, it looks like a really cool coat color.

My gorgeous grey TB mare does this same thing all the time. It is so annoying. She looks so bad after having such a good bath. You cannot stop her!

Maybe he thinks it's camouflage? When I was small, my grandmother would give me a bath and then say that I was so clean, the gypsies would steal me. Maybe Dot is just camouflaging his clean, shiny self Either way, it's a PAIN to get all that mud off! Did y'all happen to notice the 2-inch chunks stuck to his halter? There were more UNDERNEATH the halter! Thank goodness his tail is braided, or I'd have 5 feet of mud-locks to pick out

His Royal Muddy Sleekness salutes His Exalted Bayness, and wishes to express his gratitude for inclusion in the Brotherhood of Bays

Looks like he had fun. You are sooo much nicer then me! I have to stop myself from being aggravated when my cremello mare does that. You take it lightly!

Oh my... I can barely handle a grey... a cremello would send me over the edge and into the abyss! At least a grey has some fleabite spots, so you can pretend the mud is just one big one... but a cremello?
Take it lightly? Naaahhh... It's a good thing the picture didn't capture any of the language used that the time

May the Mud be with you. The carrot cake will be shared among the brothers, in a spirit of unified spoiled horsiness. And it was Fructis, not Clairol...

What is it with grays? My Phoebe rolls twice as much as my black and sorrel horses.

The Perlino Prince has delusions of black and white tobiano. It is raining right now and he is mostly black with small white patches.

LOL Cool! A reversible horse! Will match any decor - either black with white, or white with black We only do grey... and brown... stick to the earth - well, DIRT, really - tones.

Do y'all remember how it used to be said that grey horses had finer coats, and a more sensitive skin? Maybe that's something that we're seeing in grey horses making utter piggies of themselves? Maybe they're doing the same things that elephants or hippos do, coating themselves in mud to keep the bugs and sunlight off? This has really interested me for some years now, because the greys and other light coloured horses really DO seem to roll in mud more. At first, I thought that maybe it's just more visible on them... but then, I can turn out 3 bays into the same pasture, and they won't go near the mud. Dot, however, heads straight for it. Does not pass GO, does not collect $200. Just straight for the mud.

Or maybe it's BECAUSE they know how much they stand out, that they just want to make themselves darker?

Interesting questions for an animal behaviourist to dig into!
