Sweet! Where abouts in VA was that?
A couple of years ago, before the ecconomy tanked, some of the Wal-Marts around here in Manassas were actually carrying a few horse items (some halters, lead ropes, treats and grooming stuff) There are ALOT of horses in these parts. But I've never seen a hitchin rail at any store around here, except in front of one tack shop.

i think it was either in bridgewater or harrisonburg...theres a big population of mennonites there, and they are the ones who drive horses and buggies and use horses to farm.
one sunday morning we followed a bunch of horses and buggies to a little mennonite church and there were about 50 buggies hitched up out front and lots of bicycles but not a car in sight. that was in bridgewater.

They stopped selling horse stuff in the Wally World here, but still have chicken and goat feed out in the lawn and garden area. The tack used to be tucked into a section of the pet area.
Manassas is right on the border between the 'burbs and the sticks. Sometimes it feels like we get the worst of both...but sometimes I guess we get the best.

Our Walmart carries cow, horse, pig, and goat feed, as well as flyspray, halters, treats, etc. Not great quality stuff, but some people buy it.
Top this off - our local McDonalds was famous for a millisecond for installing a hitching post. It's right around the corner from the rodeo grounds, and our town has traditionally been very 'cowboy-ish', so I guess they felt the need to continue the tradition.
