Question Can you give a dog aspirin or tylenol?

My sister has a 7 yr old Rottie. I believe she is getting arthritis in her back leg or could be HD. She wants to know if she can give her an aspirin or a tylenol. I told her I would ask you guys. She can't afford a vet right now, her hubby lost his job because of GM.

We gave our GSD Ascriptin, which is coated aspirin. The coating helped keep her tummy from being upset and it did help her, she had sore hips in the cold weather.

I give my dog (70 #) a baby aspirin when she has flare ups with her hip dysplasia. You can give Tylenol, but not long term, can be toxic to their liver. If she gives Tylenol only 1 tablet (325 mg). Also, tell her to start on some Glucosamine/Chondroitin.

Please do not give Tylenol

Do NOT give tylenol! Especially if you don't know this dog's liver-health status to begin with! Coated baby aspirin can be used with caution, but a vet visit and a simple organ function panel before using OTC NSAIDS (non-steroidals) could save you (and your dog) lots in the end!

And as a side... NEVER EVER give Tylenol to a cat.....

Tylenol can be given to dogs, never to cats.

I still wouldnt give Tylenol to a dog. Too risky... Enteric coated aspirin is about the safest.

Years ago (15 probably), we had a dog with some arthritis and our vet recommended giving Bufferin, or buffered aspirin. Like half a tab 1x per day.
But my older lab is on glucosomine, MSM, and prescription Rimadyl for his arthritis these days.
Expensive!! But it works, and has helped my lab live w/o pain, or w/o as much pain, for 4-5 years now. RB

Good to know! I remembered in the back of my head my vet saying never tylenol....must have been for one of the past cats!

It did say that tylenol doesn't help with inflamation much more for fevers, so probably the aspirin is the best bet for arth. pain

Aspirin is fine, tylenol can have some lasting damage though.

When your sister gets back on her feet financially, she may want to try Longevity supplement made by Sprintime Inc. That supplement is awesome - I can't say enough good things about it. It works in about 2 weeks (versus 6-8 weeks for glucosamine, msm, etc.) and really helps with pain management for arthiritis and hip dysplasia in canines.

In February, my chessie was given 2-3 months to live due to failing health and hip dysplasia. I put her on the supplement and am proud to say that she's *standing* beside me as we speak. She was being carried around in a sling and now runs freely to the barn and back several times a day. One week when we were away, she was off of the supplement. She was back in a sling at the end of the week. After going back on the supplement, she became mobile again.

I have recommended it to some adopters who have had great success with it also.

you can give dogs aspirin, but DO NOT give Ibprofrin or anything like that. We usually use baby aspirin for our dogs though

Per my vet's orders, our 60-65 pound Basset hound gets one regular coated aspirin twice a day for arthritis in her hips.

I also caution against Tylenol. While working for a vet, I helped pump the stomachs of too many dogs whos owners gave them tylenol thinking that it wouldn't hurt them.
Baby asprin was regularly recommended and used successfully. I've never given it myself, but I do give mine gluscosimine supplements. You can give the people glucosimine to dogs, just make sure to get the ones with chondrotin. It's much cheaper than doggie versions, and it's the same thing. I get mine at Walmart for about $10 for 100 caplets. My two weigh 37# and 49# and I give them a 1/2 tab twice a day. If you sister's rottie is big, you could probably give her one whole tab twice a day, along with the baby asprin.

My vet told me the same as what others wrote - aspirin, no Tylenol.

I hope she feels better.

I've used baby asprin before with good results for minor issues.
