Because Small Dogs Shouldn't Travel Alone on the Side of the Highway

Meet Bailey.

Driving home from Fort Knox yesterday afternoon the Big Mr. and I spotted this small dog trotting down the side of the interstate, right on the shoulder of the highway. He pulled over just ahead of her and I got out and squatted down. One never knows what to expect when greeting a stray dog, but this one ran to me and jumped up into my lap. We couldn't leave her on the side of the road of course, so into the truck she went. She curled up in my lap and slept there the entire rest of the way home, about 45 minutes. She didn't move a muscle, just laid there and slept. She must have been tired.

She is just the sweetest thing, immediately accepted by my guard dog and two other house dogs, as well as all the house cats but one. Poor Sam, he just doesn't understand why this smelly "thing" is in his house.

She is extremely well mannered and didn't even mind when I gave her an introductory bath and grooming. She has claimed me as her official human, and stays right at my side, not even leaving when going out to do her business. She is house trained and most importantly, doesn't chase the cats. I don't think there's an aggressive bone in her body.

She directly came in the house and climbed into my Grandma's rocking chair, despite my long time household rule of no dogs on the furniture. But she's just too cute, I swear, makes herself at home on the sofa.

I believe she's a Boston Terrier, possibly a mix? She is black with brindling, and white tipped paws and forehead stripe. A little thin, but not emaciated, it's obvious she had puppies either early spring or late last fall. I don't know how old she is.

Introducing the newest family member at The Dragan's Lair Bailey, obviously comforable in her new home on the sofa:

TC, our Trash Can Cat, took an immediate liking to her and the two can regularly be found sleeping together:

What a sweetheart! Wonder if she got lost from a traveler? At any rate, her and TC now have something in common...they share the likes of a wonderful home, with loving owners spoiled and pampered!

I couldn't have in good conscience passed her by and left her there. I'd have never slept. If she had been trotting along the fencelines far away from the road, I'd have figured she was some farmer's nearby maybe. But she was right on the white line, and people here swere to hit them on purpose.

She loves riding in the big truck with me, I took her along yesterday when I picked up the girls from their respective after school activities. She's a good co pilot. She greeted my daughters with plenty of wet tongue kisses, much to the dismay of Otter, who was talking at the time with her mouth open. Eeeeeewwwwww! She forgave her pretty quickly, though. Those eyes just melt you.

My great grandfather raised Boston Terriers - for that main reason I have an extra soft spot for them.. they are wonderful dogs - smart, loyal, sweet.. He used to cut the tenderloin off of his T-bone for his "special" girl.. and she shared in his afternoon tea - drank it out of the saucer for his tea cup.. Just a bit of cream, no sugar..

Have you asked her yet how she likes hers..

She looks just like one we had a long time ago.It was summer and we were cropping tobacco. The driver hauling tobacco from the field to the barns came across two puppies put out by the road so he picked them up and brought them to the barns. The one that looks like yours we named Virgina for( Virgina Slims) and the other was a black and white male we named Albert(Prince Albert) We had them for a couple years both got run over, couldn't stop them from chasing.

Just a thought -- IF she did belong to someone they may be looking frantically for her. Maybe wouldn't hurt to take out a found ad in some local newspapers, call a local humane society or vets offices close to where you found her.

She had no collar, no tags. We are going to run her to our vet and have her scanned for a chip, though I'm doubtful.

After picking up Otter and Bellie, we drove to the store to get Bailey her very own red leather studded collar! Such a pretty girl after her bath!

To be totally honest, I was NEVER a little dog person. The bigger the better in my opinion. Partial to mastiffs, shepherds, danes, labs and the like. That is until I met the Mouse at Gbar's. That little dog transformed me, as she did then do when the Big Mr. went to stay at your place, Val.

I'll have to see how she likes her tea, it's almost fall, so afternoon tea will be compulsory soon!
