Angry The Dog Ate Cocoa!!!!!!!

OMG!! We have a lil 5 yr old Bichon named winston- CUTE DOG BUT DUMBER THEN A DOORNAIL!!! Any ways.. I was cleaning the house and the kitchen and I found some lil truffle like chocolate treats that werent eaten in my cookie jar, so I threw them in the trash bag. I can only assume since my brain doesnt work very well sometimes- that my daughter distracted me.. and since I have (ADD- oooooo shiny) I forgot all about the bag- only to be told my daughter the the dog ate something. ??? OMG- the truffles that I threw in the trash HAD COCOA on them and that is HIGHLY TOXIC TO DOGS--AND THEY WERE GONE all 4 of them and the truffles were made of YOU GUESSED IT>> CHOCOLATE!!!!- and my lil dog has a sensitive stomach already- He is lactose intolerant- so.. I cried and cried -thinking it was my fault for leaving the bag on the floor- I KNOW BETTER- he will get inthe trash if left out. (stupid dog) but OH Lord- its my daughters dog now. SHE will just be heartbroken if anything was to happen to him.. (me too). He was a wedding present.

I am soooooooooooooooooooooo praying that everything goes alright-
already called the vet- took him in- tried to get him to puke NOTHING came out?? WHERE DID IT GO?? Vet said to watch him for signs of him not acting right- we have a EMERGENCY clinic 5 min from us Thank GOD- so if he starts to act funny RUSH him to the clinic-

Dog already puked it out in the backyard - I found the spot- ALso found the spot that seems to have come from the other end..Not soo pretty-

BUT Please pray that my baby is alright and that I might learn my lesson from this one..

I hope he's alright.

My mom's dog once ate a sewing needle - yup, $400 vet bill to get it back. He was a shelter dog, too, and about as dumb as could be.

Some dogs will eat anything not nailed down. Most of mine have been like that. I am sure your little poochy will be fine. If he puked it out, it should be ok. Baking chocolate is the worst kind for them to eat. Don't ya just LOVE garbage hounds?

I'm sure he will be ok. My uncles dogs(2 different uncles and 2 different dogs and 2 different christmas's)one christmas got into presents under the tree. The one dog(small beagle type)devoured 2 huge boxes of chocolate, the second (large dane cross) devoured a box of chocolate, a thing of coco powder(came in a gift basket with cooking stuff)a thing of chocolate cookies and some deoderant and shampoo.
both dogs were fine other then a upset tummy for a day and a bit and then they were back to normal getting into everything in sight and raising hell everywhere they went

Prayers for your little one!

Sheesh, I avoided this thread all day because I was afraid that "Cocoa" was, um, a rabbit or a cat or something and I didn't want to be all grossed out and sad at the office. You meant cocoa as in...ummm.....cocoa.
Is your dog ok??

I had a bichon who jumped up on the table and ate all the valentines candy. And sometimes hed jump on the kitchen table and pee on it while we were gone, I guess he was mad :P He was ok. My current dog has gotten into all kinds of things and is surprisingly fine. A few weeks ago he swallowed a chicken wing (well little drumstick) whole and I was crying and deathly afraid! I learned that dogs cant tolerate chocolate because it speeds up their heart rate, etc. Im glad hes ok. :]

OH My - I guess he was mad- I find it funny that the lil one will get in the trash while my Great PYR whom can have her head can EASILY SIT ON THE COUNTER- will not TOUCH ANYTHING- NOTHING. - NEVER had to worry about her getting in to something. i have left FRESH BAKED cookies, chicken, ham. you name it ON the counter where she can see it, smell it and well EAT it if she wanted to. NOPE I can tell she was smelling it, cuz of the DRIED DROOL marks heheh..but never TOUChed it.. She loves to smell my daughters face after lunch but will never take anything but a dog cookie from her.. its so cute

Lil dogs amaze me sometime.. although we did almost lose him once.- it was AWFUL- I was making a bday for my self. a fancy one, so I was making the frosting from BUTTERCREAM (wedding cake frosting) dying it pink of course - it was too runny had to throw it OUT. HE ATE A TON OF IT!!!!!!! he was sooo sick that he was puking , and it was bloody out the back in !!! Rushed him to the vet, couple hundred bucks and a stomach pump later he was okay but he was sooooooooooooooooooooo sick for a couple of days that he wouldnt even eat a CHEETO- and the dog will do ANYTHING for a cheeto- my poor baby.. apparently never learned his less.

Just an fyi, dogs can eat a very minute amount of chocolate with no dangerous side effects. A dog must consume an ounce of chocolate per pound of body weight before it becomes an issue.

(Ie if your dog weighs 16 pounds, he must eat an entire pound (16 oz) of chocolate to get sick. I think an entire pound of chocolate would make anyone sick, not just Fido).

That being said there's always exceptions to the rule, and not all chocolates have the same amount of cocoa in them. I never give mine chocolate (just to be safe) but I think your dog is probably fine.

After rushing a cat to the ER vet at 2:00 AM after she ate almost of a foot of curling ribbon, spending $1200 on emergency endoscopic surgery, and then grumbling at her for years afterwards, I also know that pets will eat any and everything.

Glad your dog is OK from the scare.

(And I'm also glad that Cocoa was an actual product, not a name of another critter.)

MY cat also ate curling ribbon and had to have surgery $400.00 This was after we had his little hernia repaired. My husband wants to have a zipper installed to make it more convenient.

Just an FYI for anyone who doesn't know, if your dog eats chocolate you can induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. One teaspoon every 5 minutes until the dog vomits. Expect foaming at the mouth. I learned this from the vet after my dog ate 12 truffles
