Herding dogs

Does anyone know of a good herding dog book? I am trying to research how to start training a herding dog. Thanks in advance!

What breed and what type of hurding are you looking at doing??? Each breed works differantly and depending on what stock you are working will change how the dog works also.

If you are just starting make sure your dog has a good handle. They know the differnce between come heal and come near. Both very important in working dogs. Also they know stay down. These are the bassices and just like Walk Trot lop whoa for a horse very important.

As for books I can check with the trainer I use for my Corgi. Have not tried any books.

Anyway, thanks again for your advice walkerfarms. And nrhareiner, my puppy is a heeler/collie cross and I would like to train her to herd cattle. Thanks.

You might check the all breed AKC club in your area or the local AKC obedience club for a name of a local trainer. Having hands on help when learning to read the livestock, control the dog, give the commands, reinforce the commands, stand where you are supposed to, etc is invaluable. Herding training is the HARDEST thing I ever tried. And we were just doing low level AKC herding - so much going on with the dog, the livestock, me, etc.

I don't know anything about training herding dogs, but I have a friend that trains and competes. I love to go out and watch her dogs work. She's in Walters, SE of Lawton. If you're interested pm me and I'll give you her info. She can give you more information and tell you about the local things going on.
