spreading the warning

For those of you in the south and anywhere that has Cicada's or as the ol timers call them ..7 year locust....they are toxic to dogs...one of my dogs came down with the dog version of salmonilla..(sorry about the spelling)...and from what I know now, it came from a Cicada...they can also get this from dead turtles and lizards...which are both common carriers....I have two lil dogs that are kept in a large run and let out under supervision twice a day....I had noticed Cicada's in thier pen before but never thought much about it....the one lil dog barked at them and played with them but I never dreamed they might eat one...I have since found out that they are supposed to taste like shrimp..and dogs seem to like them...ummm..eewww...and they are eaten by humans in the deep south and are supposed to be safe when cooked eeewww again...my pup had to have an I.V. for two days and was passing huge amounts of blood..we nearly lost him...he is home now and better but still very weak ....just wanted to put the info out there in hopes of preventing someones pup from going through this..

OMG!! We have a ton of those here and the other night we were sitting on the front porch when was was buzzing around and our puppy dog was chasing after it and eventually killed it by pawing at it. Thankfully she didn't eat it, but I'm glad to know that now. I'll be sure to keep those away from her now on. Thanks for the heads up.

thanks so much for posting a link...as with anything it may not effect all dogs as badly as it did mine ..we have no way of knowing if he ate one or ten but after calling around to the surrounding vet's it is common for them to make dogs sick....they should post it somewhere..

Thank you for posting this. I've also heard that dogs shouldn't eat onions and of course we all know about chocolate, but that also goes for raisins. I think I'll start a thread where we can list all of the things dogs shouldn't eat. We might help save one.

Eew. I'm not in the south, but I never knew this either. Learn something new each day. Glad to hear your pup is okay.
