aaarrggg.....(long)

What to do with the dogs after they fight?

background
Doogan...neutered male, about 5 yrs, JRT/Rat terrier mix, 10 lbs, the "energizer bunny", been here about 3 months, shelter adoption, so no background, not food aggressive, not toy aggressive, a bit possesive with me by pushing in to get attention when other dogs nearby, been great with the cats, kids, lab, and til now, the new JRT.

Clooney...neutered male.about 1 yr, JRT/ looks like doxie mix, 20 lbs, only moderately active, been here about 3 weeks, dumped with 3 other JRT males and was fine with other dogs, not food aggressive, not toy aggressive, great with cats, kids, lab , and other JRT Doogan.

They have been fine with each other from day one, Doogan wants to play more, and gets yappy/nippy to entice Clooney to play. They have chased and wrestled in the yard with balls, frisbees, and tug toy, NO SQUABBLES. They sleep with me, no pushing or fussing, share a food bowl even though 2 bowls arre out. Doogan is much more "in your face" with yapping, always trying to play...Clooney is more lab-like , with being dopey and slower, less manic than Doogan
This morn they were doing their crazy 8's running in the yard and got into a tug of war with the tug toy. Doogan suddenly gets mad, nips several times at Clooney, and Clooney let him have it. They were fighting FOR REAL, and I had to throw a horse blanket over them to stop it. At twice the size, Clooney was on top, and put one puncture wound in Doogan's neck. Doogan ran to the house, cowering and shivering. I seperated them, evaluated any wounds (just the one) gave a quick bath to each . Doogan is cowering and shaking , hiding in my bedroom, while Clooney is bouncing around, wagging tail, as if nothing happened.
What do I do now?????
I have places to go very shortly, and was thinking of taking Clooney in the car with me, as Doogan gets carsick. We and the vet surmise that Doogan had been abused prior to being in the shelter, and he has been very sensitive to loud voices or having anything in your hand. Now he is terrified again.
HELP

I would not leave them together loose today. This may have been a one time deal - Clooney let Doogen know that he is top dog and is not going to take the constant pecking that Doogen does. When you do let them back together - watch them, make sure that this will not be an ongoing problem, but I wouldn't get too worried yet - they may have just been sorting pack order out and another serious fight may not be necessary.

The exact same thing happened here a few weeks back but my dogs are big. The wolf/gsd and the akita/bc got into it. Cougars (gsd) started it and Rexie finished it. Coug likes to think he's the dominant one and eventhough he and Rex DID play a lot, he went at him, got mounted from behind and Rexie (my docile pet therapy fella) was going to rip his face off from the back.

What went through our heads was the fight Coug and Chimo (the pyr) had where Coug was choking him to death. I'm sorry but this time he got what he deserved for being a bully. I may have to remove Rexie from the program now as his tail goes right in between his legs as another dog aproaches and teeth are beared.

For today keep them apart but keep a close watch, yes it could be a one time thing but here, Cougar still growls and eye balls him everytime he walks past. It's only a matter of time before he strickes again.

I agree, just keep an eye on them together for a while. I may be all it took just this one time to establish the pecking order, but you want to watch them for a bit and make sure.

They may have worked out their pecking order. I would not put them together unsupervised at first. I generally reintroduce them with me in the room, then observe. At the first sign of stiffening, I intervene with the aggressive dog. Those breeds can be dog aggressive, which is different from people directed aggresssion. They were bred to kill vermin, so some issues can be expected. Good luck with them, and hopefully, its a one time event.

First, you need to establish yourself as pack leader. Sounds like Doogan thinks he is the leader by the way he pushes in by you when other dogs are around. Don't let him do that. They need to know you are in charge.
The fight sounds like it was a "I am not taking your crap anymore type fight". I would watch them for a few days and if they act like they are gonna start again, make a very loud buzzer type noise and make them seperate. They have to know that you are the boss dog and will not tolerate any fighting for position.
