Okay...
They did change their formulas recently. I can say that I have
not had a single person in my shop (and it's my top seller) have an issue, and most of them were well aware of the change. (It's posted!) Trust me when I say that my customers are very on top of things - and they'd sure give me a big warning and heads up. We've had the formula change for three weeks now, and haven't heard a thing or any concerns or questions.
They did send the info out a month, month and a half ago to retailers - and a whole lot of them apparently a) don't read their mail from Canidae (we got a 10 page packet) or b) their rep for the area didn't pass it on and make sure they knew. Our rep even stopped by the store and talked to me about it for an hour, and then the state distributor came by and did the same thing for Mellowdane.
What I can see so far from that is that yes, the pattern is recent, and in line with the change of formula. Of course, there are probably hundreds of thousands of people who feed it... so I'd say it's in line with what I would expect to be. If you have a very sensitive dog, then absolutely, they may have an issue going cold turkey onto the new formula. Those complaints are all reactions that you're going to get when you have a dog who's been on the same thing for years and years and you switch without a gradual break.
Some dogs just aren't going to do well on the new formula, and the thing is, unfortunately, yes, they may need to find another food that will work for them. What worked before may not work now. There is no food and formula that works a hundred percent on every single dog out there, be it raw, kibble, canned, cooked, freeze-dried... the best diet is what works for your pet and you the best, I always say.
Hope that helps clarify things. I can only do it from my standpoint, of course, and what I've personally experienced with the changes.
Edit: Just want to clarify that I am in no way thinking this shouldn't be a concern for those feeding the food. It seems like a lot of retailers/people did not get the packets on the formula change, either, or uh, sure didn't tell their customers about it. Good heads up on your part, T-Mom, it's a good thing for people to be aware of.
