my suki dog

I wanted to share some pictures of my dog and see if anyone out there has this breed. Her name is Suki and she's a 6 yr old Saarloos Wolfhound. It's a german shepherd and wolf cross, not akc recognized (yet!) but it is a purebred. She's commonly mistaken for a husky or malamute, which if you know breeds is obvious that nothing about her is like either of those. So..here she is!

And I had to throw this one in, it cracks me up - you can just tell she's thinking '..stupid cat..'

I love Xena, she's beautiful! But see how she's missing the points under the eyes? I know my picture doesn't show it too well but Suki's are very defined and she doesn't have that rounded german shepherd head.

I see the points under the eyes. Suki is a beauty, how big is she? Xena is a big girl, close to 100 lbs. all legs and she has gigantic GS ears, ill have to get a pic of her with ears up, but when it comes to taking pictures, both dog and horse put ears at crazy angles when they see the camera out.

She's actually tiny! Lol. About 40 lbs; but I adopted her from a human society near me that had picked her up from the pound who found her running around a rich neighborhood. She was 6 months old, emaciated and had scabies, I got her at 8 months..it wasn't fun getting the scabies to heal up, lol.

Beautiful dog! I had never heard of the breed before. I agree, she does not look like a malamute at all, but I can see where someone would think she is a husky. Alaskan huskies are not a pure breed, so their look can really vary and they are usually on the smaller side as well.

When I read Wolfhound, I was expecting a breed similar to an Irish Wolfhound-not a dog that is part wolf.

How did you find out her breeding when she was found loose and you got her from the pound-just curious??

It was sheer luck that my mom happened to pick up a dog breeds book at a small store when she was in El Paso, Tx and saw a picture of what was exactly Suki. Lol. From there I looked it up online..but I quickly found out a lot of people mistakenly call wolf hybrids a saarloos too; the saarloos breed years ago came from wolf and german shepherd, which would be a hybrid, but once the original breeder got what he wanted he bred saarloos to saarloos and that lessened the heavy wolf like looks.

We have a guy here in the Kansas City area that breeds what he has named American Tundra Shepherds - they are wolf/GSD crosses. I think he claims now that they are breeding American Tundras to American Tundras and getting whatever he was looking for in the cross. He was in the service I beleive (he is in a wheelchair) and decided when he got out that he wanted to breed the ultimate service dog and in his mind a GSD crossed with a wolf would get him what he was looking for. His now look more GSD than wolf cross - but his first crosses clearly had the wolf look.
