Doberman Pinschers

I am looking for a doberman puppy for my husband for Christmas. He's been wanting one for years! I do not know a lot about the breed (however he does but I can't ask him or he may catch on to his gift )

I know dobies are known for hip problems, what are other genetic problems this breed are known to have?

I am having trouble finding a nice dobie pup for a good price. We are not looking for breeding quality. Anyone know of a reputable breeder in my surrunding area?

Any info on this breed would be great!

Try petfinder.com - they do have purebred pups. Click on dob. pinchers.
I am for rescuing.

The only ones that I know from experience to stay away from are the white ones. Most people I know that are into Dobies prefer the traditional colors anyway, but the white seems to be a trend nowadays. I'm sure that there are some perfectly nice ones, but the three that I've known have had devistating skin issues, combined with volitile and unpredictable temperments. Not nice animals what so ever!

On the other hand, the well bred ones that I've known have been the nicest dogs ever, in fact... when I think of a doberman, I think of a goofy dog....

Check out http://www.hadr.org/
They seem to have a lot of dogs available, and they may be able to give some breeders references (or not, since they're a rescue... and sometimes they're funny about stuff like that, you may want to also check w/your vet )

Hip problems as you've already said.

Puppies can tend to be a tad bit more suseptable to distemper, but that's cureable.

The blues can be born either hearing impaired or deaf.

Reds have a tendancy for poor vision or eye issues.

Buy from a reputable breeder that tests and guarantees against these defects. If you see a puppy for sale for $350 run away.

If you can find one with good close up German bloodlines that's even better.

VWD[Von Wilderbrand's Disease] is another issue-get one that is clear.
They are more prone to contracting Parvo for some odd reason so don't get them out and about till they are about 16 weeks old and through their complete puppy shot series.
I love Dobies-but do prefer the German Import lines.

Dobies arn't meant to be 40lb lap dogs.

We owned a doberman for about 10 years and it was one of the best dogs ive ever had. It was gentle with the kids nice to the horses and an excellent guard dog you couldent ask for more they are very loyal trusting dogs. As far as finding one i dont know any breeders in texas search on google doberman breeders in texas. or look in your local paper. hope you find your hubby a dob. puppy.

Great breed - so loving - but other than hips/elbows and vWD - heart issues are a big issue in the breed. Ask breeders about these issues - that will weed out the breeders that are knowledgeable and trying to do a good job from those just trying to make a buck - if they a least are aware of these issues, that says to me that they are making an effort.

I work at a kennel and one of the dog trainers has a dobie. I told her I want one and her advice was for me to read up on how to train them as most of the dobies she has ever come across have had dominance issues.

I agree with staying away from the white ones, they have genetic disorders

My husband likes the traditional black and rust. He may settle for a red but black and rust is what he really wants. I remember him saying too he wanted one with nice german lines too.

Can someone tell me what the difference is between german and not?

I will definatly look further into those genectic defects you guys said and see if the owners tested for it. I'm hoping to find one maybe in the 500-600 price range so keep your fingers crossed.

The German lines tend to be a bit bigger boned and larger built. More of a "working" type of dog. Our dobie, Vince was 110lbs and built to work.

The newer American lines seem to be geared more towards a 40-50lb female and a 60lb male. Much smaller boned and an entirely different disposition.

The only Dobie I ever knew didn't have his tail docked or his ears trimmed. Looked like a skinny coon dog.

Good luck in your search. If all else fails get a shoe box full of dog paraphernalia and have a note in it stating that one is on the way when you find it or when it's old enough to leave it's mom.

Hope this helps.

If you are willing to rescue, I agree, a great thing to do. Here is another site:

I had to put my dobie down a couple of years ago at the age of 13 or 14. He was a 90 pound goofball. He did have a little dominance early in life but we worked through it. He was not an aggressive dog. He was smart in ways but pretty dumb in others. He was a very good dog though. He was also pretty hyper in his younger years.

I used to work as a vet tech at a nonprofit guide dog facility and they used Dobermans in their program. They were my favorite breed of the ones they used, and seldom flunked out of the program. I always thought I would own one, but the closest I have gotten is a Great Pyrenees/Doberman cross. She looks like a hound dog!

We adopted many many dogs and 95% of our dogs have been rescues but my husband has his heart set on a papered dobie and wants to know about his history and breeding. So just this time, I'm not going to adopt.

Now I have a few more questions (like I said, we usually adopt from the local shelter and these questions aren't asked there) but if the parents have their hips certified...do they show you their paperwork that they have?

Also, I found one breeder but said they didn't have the parents hips checked because they aren't going to show them...thought that was pretty stupid on their part and that the parents were tested for vWD but not the pups.

My sister used to breed Dobie's. She only bred the German breed (Warlock breed) Known for their Large size and stocky bodies. Of all the ones she bred she or any of the owners she sold to never had any problems with hips. That breed seems to be the strongest and the healthiest. Maybe because they come from the old breed and don't have as much cross breeding. She only bred Black & Tans and Reds.
