Poor Brutis :(

Along with Chief at the vet, Brutis is still trying to heal from his broken leg. He has some sort of contraption on the outside of his leg to hold the femur in place since his bone seperated from the surgery. Well, he has been back to the vet three times and we just brought him home yesterday. Just a little while ago he slipped on the tile and twisted his leg and now is hurting. I wonder how I can keep him from doing this. I need to put non slip booties on his paws or something

Is there a way to keep him off the tile? If not, maybe you could buy some cheap rubber-backed hallway rugs to keep him from slipping?

I really feel for you, having such serious lameness things with both Brutis and Chief.... hope they both heal up well, and the vet takes pity on you and reduces your bill

Would it feasible to put a non slip rubber cane end on the end of the cast? Would it fit? They can be purchased at most drugstores or pharmacy areas of discount stores.

The thing is, that its not really a cast. Its a small plaster thing about 6" long attached to his thigh. My house is full of throw rugs. I guess I will have to figure something out cause he slips when he tries to get up from laying down. Now he isnt eating much and he usually eats like a pig. I feel so sorry for him

Our vet recom's 5 x 5 confinement for 6 weeks (I know it sounds cruel but you have to do it), re-checking cast in between, on leash only for potty, avoid stairs and slick floors. He also recom's baby powder the areas daily where the cast can make them raw from rubbing when mobile...other than that, I can't think of anything else...except if your dog is a young dog, it should heal back really well and if he/she's not overweight.

New rubber-backed hallway runners (or something like that) wouldn't move, and you could probably get some real cheap at Wal-Mart or somewhere like that. Throw rugs are usually pretty slippy, but the rubbery-coated ones aren't. That's the only thing I can think of, and I know what you mean about the slipping being detrimental to his healing progress . Good luck!

Oh I feel for you...my friends large newfie dog was stepped on by a horse and broke 2 bones. He has been in many different casts and splints and he is still not better. It has been almost 3 months! Granted he is an older dog and fairly obese, on top of his already large frame. He's had many sores from the splints and has to wear a huge cone 'cause he wants to chew the dang thing off, can't blame him. I'm not sure what their bill is at now but I know it is well over $2000. And they have to go to the vet every week at least once!!!
