My dog has a very dirty habit ...

So I adopted a 1-2yr old Jack Russell/Chihuahua (Zoey). She is currently living in my parents house with me with my parents two big dogs, a Wiemarner mutt (Molly) & and a standard Schnauzer (Wanda). Well they get along great, Wanda is the bossy one who loves to play with whatever everyone else has, Molly is the mother type - cleaning everyones faces in the morning & always being very patient, & Zoey loves to play & just follows along sometimes being very annoying.
Well ... Zoey's nasty habit is eating Wanda's ... well eating her poop! She doesn't bother with Molly's or any other types of waste but just Wandas. Now Molly & Zoey have the same diet of Nutram dog food (Canadian) whereas Wanda is on a special dog food for kidney stones. Any ideas? It is disgusting. I would love to understand why she does this & be able to stop her

Here are the monsters ....

There are products that you can get to sprinkle on the food that will make the poo taste really bad. Check with your vet, one is call Forbid, I think.

YOu can buy little pills called Deter. I get mine from Smarkpak and within a month the habit stopped! Only like 6 bucks for a big packet of them.

Those pictures are so sweet how they are snuggled up with each other. But my first thought as to "why she does this" might have to do with pack dynamics. Maybe eating only Wanda's (lead dog) poo might make her more acceptable, especially if she is new to the pack. Each dog has their own scent, maybe Zoey is trying to smell like Wanda??? Of course, who really knows, but that seems like a reasonable explanation to me...

Like mentioned before, try the Forbid, or poop scooping.

Another possibility is she might simply be attracted to the different ingredients in the recycled special food. Any chance she can eat some of that food [imagine it costs more, but this is disgusting, lol.] That might help the problem. However, short term, you will need one of the above products or something severely distasteful to her to put on the droppings, and pooper scoop as often as possible.

Our danes seem to have this problem too I can't stand it. I guess that's why they say not to let dogs lick your face

Sometimes it could be what is in the dog food you feed her. She's probally not getting the nutrition she needs, so she seeks for more higher-proteined foods. I've recalled I've seen a horse eat its own poop, and it disgusted me, and the owners didn't care one bit about her, just gave her the whatever hand throw. made me mad, so I never went back. Anyways, check the ingredients in the food, it could be not enough calorie/protein etc based. Ever tried feeding PurinaProplan? It may be a expensive, but the end result is great. I had to switch foods on my dog, like, 10 x's cause she wasnt getting the nutrients she needed from the cheap [no offense] . ...Try switching her, and every time she goes for the poop give her a firm "NO!" or take Wanda out first in the backyard to do her business then put her back in and take out the other one.

Either way, try switching her food out or give your vet a ring and ask for advise.

Thanks everyone! I am going to look into the Forbid & Deter stuff because the protein is high in her food & it is already one of the higher priced & highly recommended foods! Wanda's food is a Nike of all dog foods however & I for her specialized kidney stone diet!

I was wondering about it being a pack thing also ... who knows .. nasty though!

I've got a great trick for anti-poop-munching... 1 tbsp of canned pumpkin on their food at meal times. Just regular old pumpkin.... no spices or anything. Holistic, and works well!

NHiceGSD-I'll have to keep that in mind. I've never heard that before!

I have used the Forbid, I had a dachshund that had that habit too. The Forbid took care of it and I only had to use it for a while.
