Looking for a large dog...

And I'm getting a little frustrated. We have always had a large dog in the family (usually more then one actually). Well about a month ago, our large dog passed of old age (he was almost 14) anyhow, I've been looking for another large dog but I can't find ANYTHING. Now granted, probably could find something, but we are slightly picky.

It has to be a large dog (we already have small dogs), nothing mixed with lab, retiever, or heeler, and prefer a young dog so it can be raised around us, our animals, and my daughter.

I went to the pound, all they had were smaller dogs for adoption, went through the local paper pretty much only small dogs, even looked online at breeders (even though we prefer to get dogs that are "in need' vs. breeders) And after seeing some of those prices... Yikes. I'm not up to pay 1000 dollars or more for a dog. Especially if there's some out there that just need a home. We don't show dogs, or anything else. Just like a large guy on the farm as a family pet and gaurd animal....

What's up with them? I can't find them anywhere.... Maybe I hsould give up and just quit looking

Try Petfinder.come (they have a classified section too) or even www.craigslist.org and search in your area

Have you tried the vets offices - sometimes they know of dogs that people are looking to rehome..

Give Away ads in local papers! Usually there are large dogs that people just decide they can't keep in there.

I've not checked the vets offices yet... Will do though!

We are tryin to find something that is in arkansas. Prefer mastiff's, rotties, pits, or similar breeds. Those are what brad and I have both grown up with and just really like. We want to find a puppy so that it grows up around caley and the horses and is socialized with them vs. something that is older and might confilict with our daughter or the farm animals.

I did find a mastiff pup on petfinder but the adoption place won't adopt unless you have a fenced yard. Well, we don't have a fenced yard. We live in the boonies, we do have an outside kennel but usually the dogs are with us inside, or outside...

I LOVE the Redbone/Rhodesian cross. I bet she'd make a great pet. The Dane cross is really nice, too. I try to talk you into a greyhound, but there the WORST guard dogs out there!

Contact a rottie rescue as well as rescues for the other breeds.. you may find one there that would love a good home..

I've looked at a few of them. Seems like we don't qualify with most of them though... Several either want a fenced yard, or no other pets (we have lots of other pets), or no small kids (well, I've got a two year old)...

I think I just need some patients... I'll find the right one when it's time I guess

It's really just a personal preference. I've had heelers before and they were ok... Just not really what we want. As for the labs and retievers... just not my kind of dogs.

Cascy, you could try contacting some of the breeders you were looking into - often they will have or know of a well-socialized adult dog that needs a home. Sometimes after they are retired from breeding, they try to find a suitable home for the dogs.

alot of breeders also have females and males that they foster out.....as really they simply want the puppies or the male for its breeding.....so It wouldnt hurt to check out some breeders and see if you could foster if that is an option

You going to trade sick people in exchange for this new dog? Sorry - couldn't resist.

All we have are big dogs for adoption around here (too many apartments with size limits means the little guys go first). Mostly lab-mixes though. I don't think you should rule out labs and lab-crosses. Most mutts are listed as lab-crosses at our shelter not out of any real evidence but because that's what most people want.

We've also listed pit-mixes as shar-pei mixes because people see "Pit" and think it's automatically a mean dog. (Whole other thread).

The rescue that we adopted our Saint Puppy is in Evansville, IN we drove 5 1/2 hours to pick her up but they are mainly a rottie rescue. Her is a link to there page. They may know of other rescues in other states.

http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/vo...ottrescue.html

I highly recommend Great Danes but you have to be very careful of what you feed and the percentage of protein. We have had danes for 16 years now and they are wonderful dogs. Saints are great as well if you do not mind the drool. We had a Great Pryness several years ago and have known other people with them as well and they are a very vocal dog.
