FYI....ivermectin & dogs

Has anyone ever given their animals (aside from horses) Ivermectin?

Well, I gave my 2 dogs less than a 1/2 cc of Ivermectin each this morning, and I just left the "pet emergency" because they went blind. The vet said that they should get their sight back, but I had to leave them there so they could be flushed with fluids (I.V.)and hopefully they will be alright in the morning.
They're both Chihuahua's. One is 5.5 lbs and the other 8.5 lbs.
I really feel stupid that I did that. I thought they were going to die!! But I didn't give them a leathal dose. Thank God!! I will stick to "DOG" wormers from now on!! What a hard lesson to learn!!

My vet did say that giving your dog Ivermectin labeled for horses can be lethal. He said make sure Emmie doesnt get a hold of the syringes.
I know we get dog breeders in all the time that use horse wormers on their dogs. I personally (even with safeguard) feel safer using a dog wormer.

Yes, I have heard of bad side effects of horse wormers on dogs. Esp. the "merle" gened breeds such as Austrailian Shepherds (any breed with merel markings) Someone in my area paste wormed his miniature horses and at the same time had mini aussie puppies running around. He lost them all after becomeing neurologically incompatable- seizing continuous, abnormal breathing, unable to walk, blindness. All either died or were euthanized. The only thing they could think of was the wormer- they follwed him around the pasture (curious pups) and they said probly dropped a little bit of the ivermectin paste on the ground and the pups ate it. The only safe wormer is Strongid C. I have 2 Austraillian Shephards and the only wormer my horses get is daily strongid C pellets.

Barnbum.. good to know on the Aussies since I have 2 and one is a blue merle. Like I said I am afraid to use the horse dewormer anyway but didnt realize the Aussies were more sensitive to it.

That is alot of wormer. The normal dog dose is .01 cc per 10 orally. A 1/2 cc is the dose for a 50lb dog. And NEVER give this to any collie bred border or regular collie it is fatal.

Thank god it didn't kill them.

OMG I am so sorry. My vet just gave my GSD female Ivermectin but I thought it was for dogs. My dog is okay and seems to be able to see. I think she gave the dog Ivermectin for dogs. That must have scared you to death. Keep us posted on how they are doing.

I'm sorry to hear this, but thank you for posting it. I've always wondered about trying horse wormer, or specifically ivermectin on my dogs, but won't now . I'm not even sure what the stuff my vet gave me last time was, but she drew up a syringe of it to give orally. Thanks for the reminder that they're due for it again, and I hope yours will be okay!

I've given my dogs the cattle Ivermectin for years and years! Never had any problems. I've never used the horse one though. The dose you gave was quite high. As Cook posted the dose you gave was for a 50 lb dog. I'm curious, who gave you the dosage for your dog? I think I would be nervous giving that small of a dog a dose. Too easy to overdose IMO. Thank goodness she is ok.

Glad I could pass on some helpful information. ANY breed, Austrailian Shepherd for example. Border Collies, Cattle Dogs.....etc. It doesn't have to be a "merle" marked dog. I have a tri -colored Aussie and a blue merle Aussie............either one would have a fatal reaction. Horse Ivermection is just BAD point blank (for dogs). Even the horses poop- the dogs can still get effects from it when the horse passes it, if you have a horse poop eating dog !! The guy who lost his mini aussies that I mentioned above said that the horses poop is also "contageous" (he was told by the vet).

The only wormer in my barn is daily Strongid C !! I love my 2 aussies !!!

By a vet my female boxer and my sons male boxer was given Ivermectin for demodectic (sp) mange but it is strongly supervised by the vet and it was liquid and for cows. My 5 pound yorkie got ahold of the bottle and ate some of it and he went blind and was very sick for a few days It is only given according to their weight and YES it can Kill a dog

Good Luck

Proper dosage is important.

Monthly heartguard for heartworms is Ivermectin. It is safe for Collie breeds, but it is properly dosed.

Here is a link about the reason Collie breeds are sensitive. http://www.mwcr.org/be_aware.htm

I hope your chihuahuas are okay.

Did your dog re-gain his sight??? That's what I'm praying about right now. I would ask that any praying people out there to please pray that their sight would be restored!!
I just called the vets office and they said there is no change yet. I will call again in the morning. I don't know what I'll do if they stay blind. I feel soooo terrible!!!!

I was watching one of those court shows and one of the cases was involving a chi-chi that died from ivermectrin, I never realized it was lethal, but I let the vet do the worming so I hope it would be safe, I did not know that was what they use!

I hope your buddies ok!

You learn something new every day! I have two Border Collies, and have never heard of this before. I give them the wormer that the vet gives me and have never had an issue, TG. I'll remember to ask her about this next time I'm in though. Mind you, I've never given them any horse wormer either, but they are poop mongers......

I hope your pups are feeling better soon, that must be very scary for you

We use it alot and with proper dosing it is not a problem. It is made to kill parasites, so in high enough doses it can kill anything.

FYI.....ivermectin & dogs

Well, I called the vet this morning and they're the same.
Their pupils are still extremely dialated. But they didn't have seizures or anything through the night. So they're still blind.
I'm just going to keep praying.
I will keep you posted.

I know KJUN said that her yorkie went blind because of getting into ivermectin, or if anyone else has had this happen, please PM me or reply on here about what happened. How long did they stay blind? Will they get better?
I'm a mess over this!!!
I am trusting God for their healing!! Just keep PRAYING!!

FYI.....ivermectin & dogs

Just got off the phone with the actual vet. Spoke with her. My one dog (Loopy, the bigger of the 2) is showing signs of improvement. Ginger is the same. Unfortunately there is no anti-dote they can give to reverse this right away. It's a time thing. I went on line to research this and found that it can take up to 2-4 weeks for their sight to return. In some cases it doesn't return. The vet assured me that a dog can live a good life if blind. But I'm not going there yet. I'm praying that won't be the case.
This is going to be a huge expense.......I'm thinking I may have to sell one of my horses to pay the vet bill My mind is a whirl wind!!!
I knew I should have gone to vet school

I will keep updating........

JackieV, hope your dogs will be OK.

I have used Ivermectin(horse) on my dogs before and they never had a reaction. One is a Sheltie too. I was careful though with dosing them. One thing I cannot stop is these dogs eating horse manure.
