That's what we get for leaving one home alone.

This happened last month but I kind of forgot about it until I was looking at pictures today. It made me laugh all over again when I remembered it so I thought I'd share.

My Dad's dog, Luke, has a terrible time riding in the car. He can't go a mile until he's puking. I have never known a dog get as car sick as he does. So, when we go to camp, he doesn't go along, as it is a 2 1/2 hour drive.

Last month, we went to camp one last time to shut it down for the winter. My dog Susie went along as always. My Dad took his new dog but left Luke at home. Luke is an outside dog and my husband was home all weekend to look after him (we live next door) so Luke should have been fine.

My sisters and I left camp Sunday evening, Mom and Dad decided to stay another day. We knew it would be almost dark by the time we got home. The plan was for all of us to go straight to Mom & Dad's, work together to feed the animals before it got dark, then we'd all go on home to our own homes.

When we pulled in Mom & Dad's driveway, here's what we saw.
Luke must have been mad that everyone went to camp except him and we left him at home with my hubby (the only non-dog-lover in the family). He somehow got himself untied, stole a cushion off the porch furniture and totally ripped that thing to shreds. There was stuffing ALL over the yard. I never would have imagined one cushion could have held all that stuffing! We gave the kids some grocery bags and told them to get busy picking up stuffing. Well, that started out great, until they started throwing it at each other, stuffing it down each other's shirts, etc. It was quite the scene.

Luke didn't even feel guilty about it. I'm glad Mom & Dad stayed at camp an extra day because if they would have come home and found their yard like that, my Mom would have had a fit. She doesn't like Luke as it is, and this wouldn't have helped his case.

I didn't get a picture of Luke in the mess he made, but he's an old one so you can see what the guilty guy looks like...

Ha, the guilty party .

For car rides, give him dramamine. Looking at him, he looks to be less than 40 lbs, so start with a half pill. We had a shepherd mix that we would take when we visited the inlaws, it is an 8 hour drive, and he'd puke the whole way (thus, he was in the pickup bed in a dog box, but still, it was pretty unpleasant for him). The vet said to give him dramamine about 1/2 hour before the ride, and voila, he never puked again. Much more fun to go for a ride when you don't get sick

Thanks, SueBee. We have given him medication when he absolutely has to be in the car, but sometimes it's just easier to leave him at home... I know, that's probably mean.

unrelated...

We had this big black lab when I was a teenager. She would get very nervous in the car, not sick, just really worked up. The vet gave us something to "relax" her for trips to camp. We tried it one time. Unfortunately, it did relax her... like a little too much... like areas of her that we didn't really want relaxed... She didn't have any actual accidents in the car, but I remember my sister and I riding to camp with our heads hanging out the windows most of the way to escape the noxious green gasses come from the back seat. Ewwww! A farting dog, although cool and calm, was way worse than a nervous panting dog. We didn't give her those pills ever again!

I didn't know he was babysitting my dog for the weekend! Gotta love those herding/working dogs!!! I bet he was so proud of himself for killing that mean ol' cushion!

He wasn't mad he just got bored and found a "willing partner" that would agree to "play" with him. At least it was only a cushion he disemboweled.

Someone once told me that if a dog can't see out the window they are less likely to get sick. Never has the guts to try it out though.

Mikey, I remember a similar thing when I was a little kid. I had a stuffed toy that we called Logan. He was basically a rectangular pillow with felt arms and legs, face, you get the picture. Well, to my brother and I he was somebody, not merely a pillow. One day our dog Nickel did to Logan what your pile of energy did to that sofa cushion. My mom was less than pleased and also sent my brother and I out to the backyard to clean up the stuffing. The difference was we felt like we were cleaning up Logan's guts and were crying and gagging the whole time My mom just didn't understand that at all. Kids

Luke sure is cute. How could anyone get mad at that face!!

Just the other day I bought a new scatter rug. Apparently our lab and GSD thought it would be fun to chew it (they never bothered with the old one - even when it was new) as they destroyed one corner of it before I caught them in the act.
