Getting new puppy! -UPDATE, PUPPY PICS-

Thats right, we are getting a puppy! Another Silver lab, male this time, so we can breed Sage in the future. Sage has a thinner face and leaner body type [compared to Amber, who has a blockier head and wider body] and this new puppy's parents are the traditional Labrador shape, just gorgeous. We are hoping to breed that leanness out of Sage when we breed the two. We are getting him from Montana on November the 9th. A long ways off, but I just couldn't wait to tell everyone!

No pictures as of yet, but the breeder is going to send some of the parents and the litter in the next day or two, so will post them when I get them.

Montana?

You really went a long way to step out of the gene pool.

Until you came along I had never heard of a silver lab. They are pretty.

I wish you much success in your endeavor. Look forward to seeing pics of the little guy, the stud muffin.

Silver labs are supposedly a 'throwback' to grey/choclate labs. Funnily enough, the first guy who started breeding them also had weims, and a surprising number of them also point.

Some people get really up in arms about it but... yeah.

We've got a whole LITTER of weim x lab crosses in a local rescue right now, the guy dumped them when AKC demanded DNA on his 'silver' labs. Cute dogs, I saw them over the weekend at an adoption fair.

Silver Labradors are a great argument among many Labrador breeders.. but they are papered, purebred Labs, and they have been traced back to the beginning. Yes, they are a genetic 'mutation' of chocolate, merely a different shade.. and they are registered with the AKC as chocolate as they do not see silver as it's own colour. In many silvers you can still see the chocolaty undertone. Some silver stock has the more 'houndish' look to them - they don't have the nice blocky head like the above picture of the dad. We had to look around a bit to find the ones that were the good Labrador shape.

I promise I will post pictures as soon as the little guy gets here, I am so excited! Thanks everyone for the great comments.

EDIT Just got some pictures of the two males she has left. As you can see, they have that underlying chocolate hue. They are both so adorable.. its going to be so hard to choose.

I bet their personalities are totally different the first is probably going to be active and the second puppy a more docile laid back pup. Just guessing.

It is rather interesting.. I guess you could say that silver is a dilution of chocolate, just as charcoal is a dilution of black. The gene is Dd, and if the dog only has one silver gene, it is dd.. therefore it will be chocolate coloured, but produces silver puppies when bred to either a silver dog or a silver factored dog. There can be black labs with the silver gene as well.
