Texas Heelers

I find myself in the position of possibly owning one of these dogs, however I know nothing about them other than they are a cross between an Australian Shepherd and an Australian Heeler.

Where the Texas part comes in, I have no idea.

Any information would be appreciated!

We have two - B'lana and Sparky - they are awesome dogs - super intelligent, without the hyper attitude of the aussie, and without the agression of a heeler.. I would take another one in a heartbeat..

I've never met one. I love Australian shephards. My dad had a heeler that was just plain mean, so I have a bad view of them.

ETA: Apparently, I have met two. Val's. Shows how much I know.

Never knew they were called Texas Heelers. Never owned one but have seen several for free advertised around here. Knew of two that people owned. Nice dogs for them. Tempermental, Loyal to the owner, not good with strangers, not good with kids.

On ours, B'alana is not good with young kids (due to some idjut neighbors we had ) but Sparky loves them - they are a little rambunctious though with little kids unless raised with them..

I never knew they were called Texas Heelers either - we just called them lovable mutts..

Here is Sparky - he looks like a blue heeler, but he is a cross..

and B'lana

I did not know that is what Sparky and B'lana are!

Not good with kids...hmm...since I have two of those, this may not be best. Though, if we got one, it would be a 6-8 week old puppy from a household with kids?

Typically, if they are raised around children...they'll be okay.

Yup, and they are loyal to the family without being mean.. I wouldn't hesitate to get one if I were you. Ours are several years apart, and from completely different breeders, yet they are both great dogs..

Very similar to my Trucker. He's great with kids though sometimes he plays just as rough as they do and someone has to split them all up. He's always been great with our nephew.

But being raised as a puppy with kids makes a huge difference no matter what breed the dog is.

Trucker has endless energy but is a great snuggler also. He has a good on/off switch.

He does talk alot though. Alot, but not a barker, a talker. All day long.

I didn't know these dogs had names, either. I have owned one, many years ago. He was a very smart dog, very protective of my then two year old. I would love to have one again, especially since my little heeler died this week. I would not hesitate to get this puppy with small children. Oh, I want one!

When there is an Aussie in the mix how can you go wrong.

As with any dog. They need rules boundaries and limitations as well as socialization. The thing to remember is both breeds are a herding breed. So I don't see kids so much of an issue as what is there around your home that this dog is going to want to chase.

My dog is a pure bred Aussie and I can tell you that if he gets bored the cats are no longer off limits.

You are right - all of our dogs know from day one who the pack leader is - even the Mouse.. seen here playing with Beagle Belle - who is at her new home..

If trained right, any dog makes a good family dog... as long as that dog's energy level fits your families...

I am afraid that I don't know who has the mixed puppies.. B'alana came with us from AZ (she is 10 years old) and Sparky we aquired in Kansas when we went to pick up Smokey...

But I am sure if you look around in your area you might find some.. They are my darlings, over fed, loved, protective, well mannered, but very spoiled critters.. Isn't that what God made dogs for..

I found a Texas Heeler!

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/texasheeler.htm

Unfortunately they don't offer any information.

So did you decide to get one?

I love B'lana and Sparky! B'lana especially. *shhhh....Mouse is still my favorite!*

Both dogs were very good with my girls the times we were there. I never once worried about them. Just like I never worried about your child eating stud. Bunch of pushovers at the gbarm!
