Meet Belle.. the beagle

Belle is a 6 month old registered 13" tri-colored beagle that we have purchased, and are training, to give to my dad. He is not able to train her himself, so we will have her spayed, leash, crate, and house trained before we deliver her to him in October.

So far, for having lived in a kennel all her life, she is doing remarkably well - crates without whining much - definitely not for long; now asks to go out for potty - is learning to potty on command; walks well on a leash; and loves people..

Belle learning to play tug of war with Molly Mouse:

I have to give some credit to Molly Mouse - she is really helping her to come out of her shell - since Molly also sings on command, I wonder if we can teach Belle that trick before she leaves; as a beagle, she should be able to hit those high notes easily!!!

She's a cutie!! My son had a beagle named Bobo and he was hilarious. We could howl at him and he'd howl too. He died last winter and we still miss him.
Your dad's gonna love her!

My dad has always loved and had beagles - and with the health issues he has had in the past year, we are hoping she will give him the desire to get up and out more..

I tried to talk him into a Molly Mouse type dog - but all he would say is he would take any dog, as long as it was a beagle.

We told him about her last week, and he is so excited - he is not sure who he is looking forward to seeing more - us or the dog..

My brothers will be putting up an outside kennel for her to go into once in a while so she can really run, and this critter will be sooo spoiled. She will be delivered with training, crate and suitcase full of leashes, toys, bones, blankies, treats - whatever a well heeled hound might need!!

GBar, what an incredibly GOOD thing you are doing for your Father.
I absolutely adore beagles. We have a beagle/JR cross and she is quite the character.
I'm sure October won't come soon enough for your Father.

That is so sweet of you to do that for your father. It takes things like animals and children to keep the older generation going sometimes.

My father is in ill health and what keeps him going is getting up every day to see his favorite great granddaughter.

That is a wonderful gift. I am a firm believer that animals truly make life brighter. I bet he can't wait to get his hands on her!

She is a cutie. I hope he really enjoys her and she helps him to get up and out more. My grandmother lost her husband and moved into a condo. She was lonely and didn't do as much as she used to. Well we brought her a chi and she has that dog so spoiled. He gets baths and treats and they go for walks.

I really hope you see the same changes withyour dad

Well you answered my question does your dad know about her or is she a surprise. Given that he knows about her is she going to go visit occasionally? Could be good for her and for your dad. Help to ease the transition more for Belle then for your dad.

I think that's great that you are doing this for your dad. What a wonderful gift.

My parents wouldn't accept a gift such as that, I know I've tried. They just aren't pet people. The things they miss out on.

They live several states away, so no visiting I am afraid. I did discuss this with my mom first - if she hadn't agreed, it wouldn't work.

Dad has a muscle wasting disease, and we almost lost him last January. Since the diagnosis, he has been understandable depressed at times, and I know he never thought he would have a chance to be a dog owner again. As he is responsible for my love of horses, and himself a lover of animals, I could not let that happen if it was within my power to change things..

I believe that animals do help people life longer, happier lives.. and I think little Belle (named such, as she will be my dad's own little Southern Belle) will do just that..

My mom is already worring about her in her crate all day while I am at work, and I call with Belle updates to them, and photos via email, every few days..

Well, Belle has mastered house training pretty fast - she is askig to go out, and (knock on wood ), has not had an accident in the house since Monday - pretty quick for a beagle, and a kennel dog...

The secret is treats - and going outside every 20 minutes.. great weight loss program too especially in this heat..

I also teach to Potty on command.. it will save time later on for dad on those frigid northern winter nights..

Awwww she's cute!!! What a great present she'll make!!! Our next door neighbor (not the one with the horses) used to raise beagles, i'd play with them all the time, and would take care of them while he was gone out of town.

They are awesome dogs aren't they - so sweet and lovable.. and SMART..

Belle was getting a treat once she came back in, for every time she would piddle or poo outside - within two days, she learned that going outside would bring a treat - and we had to work on the going outside "for a reason" would bring a treat, not just to go outside and visit with the cats..

She is one smart cookie this little girl - and should have my parents trained to do her bidding in no time at all
