Rest in peace Miss Bug

On Sunday August 12th MDR Boarhunting Ladybug finally lost her battle with cancer and age. She was my baby. She was my first Great Dane and the dog that got me involved with dogs at a level I had never known before. She was smart, funny, sassy, a complete pain in my behind, and my best friend. I was so lucky to be able to have Saturday night with her just to lay and sleep with her and tell her how special she was to me. I owe a huge debt to Shepdog for being with me and helping me take Bug in to the clinic and setting with me and talking to a very wonderful vet and holding Ladybug as she slowly went to sleep for the last time.

Her passing was peaceful and quick and so much easier on her than I ever could have hoped. As much as I miss her I was really concerned that with the cancer she would start having a lot of problems and either be in pain or have seizures etc. She never had any of those problems and was up, moving and pain free up until the very end, so I feel blessed.

I miss her every day and I can't wait to be able to go pick her up so I can have her back at home, even if it in a little box (although I am considering putting her in an M&M's jar since that was her favorite!). She looked pretty rough at the end with all of her weight loss.. but this is how I will always think of her

Mellow, you and Bug were indeed fortunate that you two had those last moments filled with grace and sweetness

She was an extraordinarily beautiful dog and by your pictures we get a glimpse into the give and take of the partnership you two shared through the challenges and successes. Extraordinary beauty yes, but also an extraordinary richness to that life

So sorry.

These digital pictures make them look so alive, its tough to look at them sometimes after they're gone - sort of a mixed blessing...

Mellow,

So sorry for you loss and thankful that she went peacefully! What a beautiful girl! It's never easy to say goodbye to our bestfriends.. I think the hardest part is never being able express how much you love them and want to make them happy again, whether it be treats, hugs, car rides or just a couple scratches here and there; it's just so hard not to imagine making their tail wag one more time.....they just love us so completely...it's no wonder their lives are so short compared to ours... they already know the lessons we take forever to learn about life, love, and living....

*lean* <--- that's Gabespeak for *hug* Aw, you don't owe me a thing. You would have done the exact same thing for me in a heartbeat, and I know it.

She was a good dog, no, she was a great dog. I remember meeting her for the first time when she came into my store, and I thought, wow, what a beautiful dog.

Ladybug had presence, the sort of presence that grand ladies have in old films, where they saunter on by in a foam of lace and brocade, and every man stops to look and admire. And then she would turn into a friendly, leaning, tail-thumping beast in a wink of an eye, and tilt back her head and smile this huge, tomboy grin right in your face, and nudge your hand if you had the audacity to stop.

As much as she loved getting a good pat from anyone (for idle hands are the devil's workshop if they are not scratching a Great Dane) it was always with the understanding that you were basking in her presence, but her adoration and love was always with Mellowdane.

She was one of those dogs that was unflappable; she loved children and cats and puppies... well, mostly unflappable, unless you were a crazy Golden Retriever that was trying to bite Mellowdane. Then heck hath no fury like a Bug.

She loved car rides and ice cream, which I agree are two of the best things in life, dog or human. And boy oh boy, could she fly when she was in agility; boing! Zoomies! *grin*

I remember her and Gabe stuffing themselves together one afternoon in the back of my Vibe, and I still don't know how they did it, but there had to be two hundred and fifty pounds of dog in a space meant for one. And both of them were grinning like idiots, since we were laughing so hard both of them got to go.

But... what it all comes down to that I wanted to say that Ladybug was a Very. Good. Dog. And I miss her too.

I guess all of us with dogs and pets and family should just reach over tonight and give them a ruffle on the head and say we love them.

(Even Ali, who brazenly stole my licorice caramels off my counter and ate them while I was gone today. Go figure. Goofball. I'm sure she ate them with Ladybug's blessing, even though they weren't M&M's. And yes, I do think that M&M jar is very fitting.

When we go to Vegas, we'll go to the M&M store, buy ones in merle colors, and eat half a pound of them in her absence. I think Bug will approve, and candy eaten with love has no calories. )
