Red Mange... Poor Sadie...Don't open if you have a weak stomach

OK, I have been hesitent on posting this but here goes, we'll see what we get! My hubby got me a supposedly aussie blue heeler cross for Valentines day 2 years ago. She was not the one he was originally going to get but all the others ran away exept her who just sat by his feet and looked at him practicly begging to go home with him. She came home with flees and ticks all over - her first stop was the bath. She was not a typical pup, just didn't really care about people, just wanted to be left alone. She soon became my velcro dog and also fell in love with hubby's aussie, Hank. Anyway, we lived in AZ when we got her, she was just an outside dog but went with us everywhere. She always had skin problems, dry patches that she would scratch raw. Took her to the vet, did a skin scraping, found out she had Dermadetric Mange. Vet told us it was incurable and just to give her ivomec and benadryl everyday. This helped a little bit but not much. Well lets say that it has gotten 10 times worse in just the last month. Here are some pictures of her as a puppy, then up here in VT, then just recently where she is really bad.

Ok, so I have given her tons of baths, letting it soak and getting the scabs off. Shaved the area as best I could without hurting her too bad. Put on a cream made for "red mange" which seems to be helping but she still is sore. She goes about normal activities and such, but you can just tell it doesn't feel good! (duh)

Just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas or similar situations with their dogs. Also what kind of dog do you all think she is? I don't think she is just aussie blue heeler, I think possible catahula?

There is some stuff I got for my horses that is suppose to heal this type of mange and or manage it. It's a cream and my gosh it stinks!!! It works on other wounds as well not just mange, in fact it works so well on my horses wound I had to stop useing it as it was healing up a hole to fast and wouldn't let it drain properly. I can say it's great for wounds on horses, and grows the hair back. I will try and find the guys website, I know he sells it on ebay. I'll get it and send you the link. If nothing else I have the tub at home I can post tomorrow about it. It's worth a try!

From what I know about Demadex, all dogs technically "have" it but stress or a low immune system can cause it to show its ugly face. (it is also known to be hereditary) Ivomectin and something for itching are good options. Mitaban Dips can be an effective way to treat this type of mange too. It's a long, tough road though. It takes forever to get rid of and it can take it's toll on the victims. I would search the internet to find the best options for treatment.
Your puppy is adorable!!

Poor baby! I don't understand why the vet can't heal it! But I don't know anything about mange, either. Poor thing! That can't feel good.

I think you might be right on the mix. I have seen some Aussie/heelers. The color is right and the the ears are right for Aussie but the nose and face shape make me think of a boxer cross my mom used to have.

I guess it could be anything, but if it was catahula you would know. They have.....um.....very distinct personality traits! What you described sounds more Aussie to me.

No matter what the cross that is a cute puppy, even with the skin problems!

Cute pup, and sorry about the mange. If its a mix I'd would have to say that it has a little pit in it, just look at that adorable head! lol

Yeah this is what I am using now! It seems to be working a little bit. But I have to be careful where I put it on her becuase they say it is VERY bad for them to lick, and she sure tries! And I can't put a cone on her, b/c that would really hurt her neck!

Thanks all for the tips! I'll keep you updated and post some new pics soon!

HAHA I thought pit too! She does kinda have that attitude! She doesn't really care for strangers, but just keeps to herself most of the time until she gets to know you!

Poor puppy!! any way I have a ST.BERNARD and when I got him as a pup he had some scabs on his head and over his body I took him to the vet and he told me he had mange!! well I had it under control and sometimes it would go away then times it would come back and there were times it smelt like he was rottening away I gave him iodine baths all kinds of meds on him and more trips to the vet..But I figured it out on my own He was having reactions and breaking out because of this one kind of DOG FOOD I would feed him and times when the store did'nt have his regualar kind I would get him pedigree and he would clear right up and not thinking twice about it when I put him back on his regular food he would break out again..so after all that and making the poor dog suffer it was his food!!! he now only gets pedigree and it's been a year since he had a breakout!!!might be worth a try but he looked just like your dog!!!hope that helps!!!!

Demodex takes a dedicated owner to effect a "cure." It effects younger dogs rather than older, especially pups, due to their immature immune systems. Stress, lowered immunities, and a genetic predisposition all come in to play with demodex. A strict regimen of treatment helps - weekly or bi-weekly shampoos, a topical ointment, shaving, are all treatments that help the outside. Also look to strengthening the dog's immune system from the inside - dog probiotics is one way to help. Your dog will grow up and his maturing immune system will eventually take care of the mites.

Yeah she has had it since a pup, and we have been working on it for about a year now (she was diagnosed one year ago and is 2 now). She gets weekly baths, sometimes more, and I try to keep it shaved (once a month or so) and keep up on treatments. I think she is beyond the age of growing out of it, I think it is a case of it being hereditary (Good thing she is spayed). I just want her to be comfortable.

My mom has a dog that we got from the shelter.
When we got her she was fine but soon after she lost all her hair and developed yeast infections on her skin and in her ears-leading to many earinfections

We (including the vet) couldn't find out what was wrong-she thought maybe mange-or the yeast infection came with her from the shelter.

Long story short-we spent so much time scrubbing and medicating and nothing helped so the vet wanted to check for Alergys instead but mentioned going out in a limb and testing her thyriod first becuase it was a long shot but easier to cure and on rare occasions looked like this dog.

End result- all her ear infections, hair lose, ichieness, yeast infection trama was ALL due to a thyriod imabalance! Now the dog has a ton of hair and doesnt ich, best of all she is very happy!

I'm not sure if this is the case, but It couldnt hurt?

Edit: I should have mentioned that I suggested the thyriod becuase the really bad pic looked just like my dog's skin

I have a dog grooming shop, and our top selling item for skin condition-all kinds-has the main ingredient as colloidal silver(sp??). We always have to keep restocking cause it works so good, and people like it a lot. I have seen it work for my personal dogs as well....also reccommended by a vet...

I don't think catahoula..

but I do think you got one where the heeler personality is more dominate.

but with out knowing the dog you can't really tell.

very pretty girl, so sorry about the mange. Is she fixed? going into heat can make the mange worse, stress and all.

best of luck

If it is demadectic mange, which I am not sure that it is, you would need to have her tested, then Ivermectin given orally every day is the way to go. It kills the mites that cause the mange. My rat terrier had it for about 4 months. If it has been ongoing for two years, I would suspect that it is something else, like allergies. Does it happen more often in warm months? It looks like it could be flea allergies to me.
