Question about Greenies.

My dogs are no longer allowed to eat rawhide, for a variety of reasons.

Can someone tell me about Greenies? Do they last a long time or are they chewed in 10 minutes? How do they compare to the Freshies or Nutri-dent things at Walmart?

I'm not sure how they compare to the nutri-dent and freshies. I would guess they are pretty similar but again I am not sure.
Some of my dogs like the greenies and some don't. For my small dogs, they seem to last a really long time, but my boxers have them gone in no time (they BTW will eat anything). But they do a good job of cleaning their teeth.

Wasn't there some bad stuff in the news a while back about greenies or was that another brand?

Ok, I'm not going crazy---just "googled" greenies recall and got the info. I thought I had heard. Dogs have died from eating these (choke hazard etc.). I remember making a mental note not to buy these treats. There was talk of reformulating these treats---don't know if that has been done. I'm not computer savvy enough to include the sites, so you will have to google yourself.

I believe the issue with greenies was people giving the small ones to their large dogs and the dogs wolf them down and then choke on them. If you stick with the appropriate size, I'd think you'd be okay.

Lu-lu gets greenies and while she is not a dog, she LOVES them and will shred the bag if I do not put it in a cat-proof area. Though that may just be because she loves food in general and is a fatty.

Greenies are not totally digestible. Please read http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/greenies.asp

Greenies don't last as long as raw hides.

Ah yeah I do remember that now. A choke hazard, I was thinking about the wheat gluten thing and couldn't place that. But now that you mention it there was an issue with choking.
I have not ever had a problem with them though. But that is something to worry about.

I think you are fine if your dog is not one that tries to gulp it down in one big bite. But I think I would try looking at other alternatives.

as said above, feed the appropriate size and don't over feed them .. they are more digestible than rawhide but do not totally digest. They have been reformulated to make them more digestible.

I have no problem feeding them and my dogs love them.

I tried them once and never bought them again. They were gone in a matter of seconds and there was tiny little green pieces of it left all over the carpet. I will stick with rawhides.

Smile Question about Greenies.

I gave my big dog Tango a Greenie before, he loved it and didn't have any trouble eating or digesting it. Before I got it for him, I read about greenies and on the site it said that they were alot easier to digest for dogs than before. Here's the site for info on them that I read.

They are gone pretty fast, and are a major choking hazard, even if you buy the appropriate size, because the dogs can break pieces off. We have also had to do surgery to remove several from dog's stomachs before, because they swallow a large piece and it just sits in there, causing a blockage.

I give mine the cow bones filled with yummy stuff in the inside. They still love them even when the stuff inside is gone, and pieces don't break off of them. They last forever!

Okay, but can the cow bones cause them to scratch their throats? That's the problem we're having with rawhides. Butch scratched his throat with one and I'm afraid Boy will get obstructed with them. But, they all three NEED to chew on SOMEthing.

Range, have you tried Busy Bones? They sell them at Walmart and our dogs love them! The best part is they actually keep the dog busy for awhile, even the Newf!

The big Busy Bones will keep Butch entertained until it's gone...but the Pitbull has them gone in 5 minutes flat. Cassidy hasn't figured them out, yet.

Sigh. Why can't this "bone to chew" thing be easy?

Well heck dogs will try to kill themselves on anything.
At the clinic we had done several surgeries-one culprit a sock.
I feed greenies and the boys love them.
I do not feed real beef bones they can shear and leave scalpel sharp bones in the tummy.
I would sooner deal with a tummy full of ground rawhide and chloryphyl in their tummies.
range how true-anything can be dangerous.

I've tried the greenies before but my dogs shred them and I end up with green confetti all over the floor. Now I take my dogs' Kongs and either put treats in it and watch them bop it around or smear peanut butter in it and they'll go for hours. My older pittie, Boo, can't resist and will chew and lick on his Kong for hours on end.
