Catahoula pups...

Well...
they were at it again looks like we will have a litter in about 9 weeks. This will be a very special litter as it will be Jolene's last, and the pups should be ready in time for Christmas. So half price to horsetopians...??? but I don't ship puppies, so you would have to wander down here to the swamp for pick up

We had a pair when I was growing up, Blue & Lep. They were quite the pair when working cattle. But Lep died and Blue refused to work without him. She died about a year later. She was never the same without her partner.

It will be very hard not to keep one. Last litter it was the red lep pup with green eyes that really got to me, and the first litter it was the plain yellow one with blue eyes..I am very happy with the people they were placed with, but it is so hard. That, and the whole family has a favorite pup...so that would be keeping 4 and I am quite sure I can not manage a pack o'houlas

They bond so tightly I am not at all surprised that they would morn their mate so much. I can't walk the female with out the male complaining loudly...we can hear him for blocks. ( I can not take the two together, but I love the whole pack walks when my hubby and dirty dog come along)

I would love to work cattle with them and my horse...now I just have to find some cows. The dogs are being exposed to horses and are very respectful of them. Excellent hunters. We have started some agility training with my male. And the most important thing...I can reliably call them off...

We had a huge test of this the other day..one of the neighborhood kids went into the yard without me. I had asked him to stop and he just kept going, I was distracted talking to his father. The two dogs came tearing around the corner after the kid...but stopped in their tracks after the almighty "NO". They looked like..ok? now what? wag wag

I have never been so scared in my life. We practice calling them off of things, but have never been so tested...and it worked. They are just such very good dogs.

I bet they are so cute! There is a catahoula/great dane mix that comes in the vet clinic where I work, that is the closest I have ever been to one...

I wonder what the price to hot shot a puppy to Kansas is? Hubby's company has a deer camp in Kansas, that would be one heck of a boon doggle

Is it a catahoula/dane cross or a merle dane? Danes look so much like them in build...just bigger everywhere. I have had some plain solid colored catahoulas and everyone thinks it is a mix.

The owners say she is a catahoula/dane mix, but she does look very much like a blue merle great dane. She is really pretty, but a real handful! Way more energy than any other great dane I have ever met, but I think it has more to do with lack of training and redirection than breed.

I will post picture when the pups are here for sure.

And the thing is with that mix, it would be the Dane calming the catahoula. There is really no way of telling with a mix...heck there is a huge variation with in the catahoula breed. That is the problem with breeding for brains, over looks

What's the deer camp near? We can make this work!

Can you imiagine some poor person having to be cooped up all the way from your place to mine with a catahoula pup......that would not be very nice for man nor beast.
