Swollen or Enlarged female parts??**New Question**

Hello. Have a question. Our female beagle is about 9 months old. She is not spayed yet, but is going to be. She has no access to any unneutered males. Her "female parts" are swollen or enlarged. Not like, extremely swollen, but just noticeably. I can take a pic if needed. I have never owned a female that wasn't spayed at an early age. So I was wondering is this from her going into heat??? Or my other question is, she is kenneled with our Aussie, but he is neutered. But, could he still be interested in "the act", and could it be from that?? Just trying to rule out anything normal before I rush her to the vet. Thanks so Much for any advice.

Female dogs do swell when they're in heat, but also when they go through a false pregnancy. If you haven't noticed any bloody discharge, I'd take her to the vet to get her checked out for a false pregnancy. (Female's heat cycle usually consists of them bleeding for about 7 days, but they can be swollen for another 14 days.)

And yes, your neutered male could still be interested in doing the deed, but that wouldn't really cause swelling. Though it could...I'm more inclined to think she's either in heat or going through a false pregnancy.

Most likely IN HEAT. She's at the right age. Keep her away from the boys! LOL

General Information

Estrus ("heat") is the mating period of female animals. When estrus occurs, animals are said to be "in heat" or "in season." Dogs generally have their first estrous cycle at 6-12 months of age. Some females of the large breeds, however, may not have their first estrus until they are 12-24 months of age.

The complete cycle takes about 6 months, resulting in 2 estrous periods each year. Individual variation occurs, but a given female's pattern tends to be repeated regularly.

The estrous cycle can be divided into 4 stages:

1. Proestrus: This stage begins with the appearance of vaginal bleeding. It normally lasts from 4 to 9 days. Male dogs become very interested in the female; however, she will not yet mate with them.

2. Estrus: This is the stage in which the female will accept the male and conception can occur. The vaginal discharge is more yellowish than bloody. Ordinarily, the stage lasts for 4 to 13 days. Your female will stand still and hold her tail to the side when you touch her back or a male dog tries to mount.

3. and 4. Metestrus and anestrus: These 2 stages are periods of ovarian activity, but with no significant outward signs. False pregnancies frequently occur during metestrus.

Some Important Points

* You should consider your pet to be "in season" for 21 days: 7 days coming into heat, 7 days in heat, 7 days going out. Though conception is most likely during the middle 7 days, Mother Nature doesn't always follow the rules. Confine your pet for the entire 3 weeks.

* Remember that the above information is general. Not all females follow these patterns. Consult with the doctor if your pet does not seem typical. Sometimes, cycling problems can be an early warning of more serious problems, and the sooner they are dealt with, the better.

A male dog will travel a great distance when a female is in heat and likewise a female will go traveling to look for a male.

Keep a very close eye on your girl.

Ok, New Question. Tonight I witnessed our neutered male Australian Shepherd, Sebastian, and our girl, Shelby doing the deed. I was wanting to make sure that neutered males don't ever have one fertile "shot" left in them, as is the case sometimes with horses. Someone please tell me that isn't possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to attatch a pic of both just for fun! Sebastian is the red-tri Aussie, and Shelby is the Beagle.

Hi Amanda,
Sounds like your girl is growing up, keep her away from the male dogs!

Oh, if he was neutered that long ago, you definitely don't have anything to worry about! I'm not sure if it works the same way as geldings, but even if it did, I would think 4-6 weeks would be the maximum...

She is most likely just swollen due to being in heat.
I have to say, she is one cute pup! Sebastian is a good lookin' boy as well.

My mom's collie can be quite the little hussy when in heat. She will whine at my male (neutered) lab and lick on his "boy parts" until he does something about the situation.

He always looked embarrassed when I catch them at it (she's rather fat and I think it's the moped syndrome: fun to ride until your friends see you riding it).

Lol, poor dogs.

My first experience was 28 years ago when my GSD was doing it with our neighbors mutt. I've seen it happen several times since then. Even though she can't get pregnant it would be a good idea to separate them for a short while. I wouldn't want to chance her developing an infection.

This is the biggest challenge I face with having 4 girls in tact. Twice a year I have to keep an evil eye on them and unfortunately it doesn't always work. But then I also own the male and it can be very stressful for me trying to keep them apart. Kids that don't want to put a dog out seem more than happy to help when I have a female in heat.

If money is tight you have several months before she comes into heat again. Save your pennies. When I got Liberty spayed I made her appointment two months in advance. Then I worked at saving money for her spay.

Remember to keep a tight rein on her. Quick as lightening she'll be off looking for some action. My toy poodle Olive is my Velcro dog until she is in heat.

I took her next door with me when she was in full heat off leash. Stupid me. As soon as my back was turned she was gone. I jumped in my utility vehicle and made a mad dash for home. I knew where I'd find her. Sure enough Benny was trying to oblige her. That is one mating I definity don't want. (He's an Aussie) So for the remainder of her heat she was on a leash 24/7.
