Underground fence?

We have two dogs that want to run off down the street or through the woods. Since we had one very special dog hit and killed 6 months after we moved out of town, we don't want it to happen again.

We have a pretty big yard and fencing it off isn't an option. I would really like to get the underground fence for the dogs. Right now we have to be outside supervising and even then they take off once in awhile.

I'd like to hear everyone else's experiences with this type of fencing, good and bad, before I invest in it. Does it really work? I tried it years ago in town and my dog learned to run through it. I don't want that to happen again.

Oh,and our two dogs are a German Shepherd and a Miniature Pinscher. Kind of opposites on the size scale.

People next door have finally after 5 years put their in. Too lazy to barry it but it is at least in. works well for 2 of the 3 dogs. The 3rd was out again the other day.

I really do not like them. Even if they keep your dogs in they do not keep other animals out.

As for too large of a yard to fence. When I bought this peice of property (7 achers) I fenced 5 for the horses and 2 for the dogs. Did not cost any more then what a good quality invisable fence cost when you factor in all the collors (have 6 dogs then and again now) If you install the IV properly it is no more work to put in a 2x4 welded wire fence. Cemented wood post every 100' and "T" posts every 10'. Has been up for about 8 years and except for the part the horses damaged it has worked very well. Took me about 2 weekends to put it in. Was not an all day thing either for the first weekend as that was spent putting in posts.

The key to the invisible fencing's success is training. The installer will usually spend some time with your dogs, getting them familiar with the boundaries and such. For some dogs, the training is enough to keep them in a yard, whether the fence is on or not. (My dogs don't have any fencing, but through training know where they can and can't go.)

I have known of several dogs that once they learn the shock stops past a certain point, the invisible fence no longer contains them. If you have dogs that have a high tolerance for pain, for example, or a high prey drive, those things can negate any usefullness of the fence. In a sense, you'd be wasting your money. Money that, in my opinion, would be better spent setting up a small fenced area for them, or tie out chains or runs.

We have one for our chocolate lab and jack russel. It works really well! I agree that it is all about training. My lab took a little time to teach, you have to keep them on a leash for a while during training periods but then they figure it out. The training is pretty common sense, you put the collor on with rubber protectors so they only hear the beep, then walk them up to it till it beeps, then run with leash back to house. You have to do it over and over again in all parts of fence to make it a habbit for them. My JRT took no training at all, he heard the beep once and stayed WAY away from the flags! They have had it for 8 years, the JRT has run through only a couple times. My sister drove the lab through it, oops... But I think it works really well, like you putting up a fence was not an option, so we went with this and have loved it. Good luck.

My avatar is the same way. I enclosed about 3 acres with the wire and he respects those flags and those beeps like nobody's business.

My buddy brought over his two labs (100#+) and they both learned that going near the flags was no fun.

At first I was skeptical but those dogs have made a believer out of me.
