Fleas

I have a toy australian shepherd that is almost 5 months old . He stays inside most of the time, but stays outside while I'm at work. I can't keep the fleas off of him.

I give him a flea bath every week and have used that Biospot pour on stuff once a week as well. I keep finding fleas on him, and now I found a tick . Does anybody know of a product that will kill and repel my super fleas?

I use Frontline on my dog. She runs through the fields and woods then sleeps in my house. I think that Frontline is water repellant, when I used Advantix I still found ticks. Good luck, I used Bio spot and it didn't work for my dog or cats.

I have tried both Advantage and Frontline Plus. Advantage worked for me when I lived in downtown KC and didn't worry about ticks. I believe that Frontline is a better product and will also fend off ticks.

It's more expensive than the Bio-Spot products, but I think it's a case of getting what you pay for.

I know my mom feeds our dogs and barn cats garlic, it's more of a prevention and not scientifically proven but they never get fleas. She just puts it in speggetti sauce and the dogs and cats get the leftovers. It couldn't hurt to try.

Fleas this year have been HORRIBLE!! I just bought some Advantage and it's better, but they're not totally gone. The vet said that the Advantage works better on fleas and Advantix works better on ticks. We don't have a tick problem here, so I tried the advantage. I've used the biospot before too and it didn't work well.

A warning though. DO NOT give the animal a "flea bath" and then use the Advantix. I was babysitting my mom's dog for a week and before he went home I gave him a flea bath. (I didn't know she was using Advantix) The next day he started vomiting and diarrhea with blood. She took him to the vet and he said that the combo was very toxic for the dogs. She brought him in soon enough and he is doing fine, but I didn't know you couldn't mix the two. (I felt terrible! )

There is a pill out there that the vets have that will kill all the fleas on a dog within an hour!!! It costs about $10 a pill. (I don't know the name of it though.) I am thinking about using that too, as long as the vet says it will mix o.k.

The pill is Capstar and it kills what is on the dog or cat at the time and for a short while but has no residual effect.

Ok well I will tell you what we told everyone when I worked at the vets. Treat your yard and house. It doesnt do much good to treat the dog then send them back out to get them again. Then either flea dip or capstar the dog. The capstar is pretty good. It kills everything within 24 hours. Not sure it works on ticks though. Then frontline/advantix the dog. DO NOT put the frontline/advantix on a dog you have just bathed or dipped. Wait three days because it uses the oils in the dogs skin to work. You take away the oil you take away the medicine. It is water proof after it kind of soaks in. Oh but DONT let the advantix get on a cat if you use it. I cant remember why but it will kill a cat. If the dog has fleas real bad you might want to deworm him too because if they ingest the flea eggs they probably have worms...Hoped this helped!

I use Revolution on my cats and dog. My vet told me it was better than Advantage as it isn't an insecticide as is Advantage.
It is good for fleas, ticks and some worms.
Good luck!

My cat and dog both get frontline plus - keeps the fleas off for 3 months. I don't bother with it over the winter on the cat since she stays inside for about 4-5 months and comes nowhere near any fleas.

Frontline (& frontline plus) is more expensive but it is truly a godsend in getting rid of those creepy-crawly parasites.

The Humane Society I used to work for doses each dog they get with advantix (if they're old enough - I think there's an age limit) and the flea populaiton is minimal. The dogs go outside about once or twice a day and bring in stuff. But still - 50 dogs and low flea populations? You know it's working.

the pill is called Capstar, it can be bought for far less than $10/pill. it works great and you can buy it over the counter, it only kills adult fleas so you can give a pill for the larva called Program, that is made by the same company, and they can be given at the same time. we have a dog with flea allergies and this is the only thing that works, none of the topicals worked from expensive to cheap we have tried them all. Givng the capstar can also kill the fleas in your home because the fleas will jump on the dog and they will die, you can give the capstar once aday until you no longer see the fleas.

I like frontline plus BUT for fast reaction I use adams spray from petsmart or any dog care magazine and my vet has it , it kills fleas , flea eggs ,larv. , mainge , mites , ticks and lice they have a shampoo , a spray , stuff you put in your carpet and vacuum up and they have the bombs for the house . I like to use the shampoo then spray and then carpet stuff in case its gone that far becauseit kills immed. then I apply the frontline plus and it works everytime and none of my 3 rescue dogs have had a external parasite since.

When you have a major flea problem you have to treat more than the dog. You have to treat the dogs area too!

I have tried many flea products but nothing works as well as Frontline plus. But when the flea problem is a major one even Frontline can't get rid of them alone.

A flea spends little of it's lifetime on a dog. They will get their blood supply from anything warm blooded including man. This is why it's very important to attack them in your environment as well as on your pets.

When it comes to fleas man has to wage war on them. Add flea powder to your vacuum bag and vacuum often. Wash dogs bedding in very hot water. Treat the outdoors too.
