Underground electric fencing

Has anyone ever used this stuff? How does it work? Is it still good in the winter?? I need to find something (other than tying them up) to keep my dogs at home because the neighbours are being not very nice when our guys go to their place (even though theirs come here....). Suggestions?

Yes we've used it. It works too. All you do is put the sensors in the ground and the electric collar around the dog's neck. You then set it anywhere from 1-10 with ten being the harshest. When the dog gets within a few inches of it it shocks it. It sounds harsh but it's really not. The dog learns and they don't go near it.

We have the electric fence. It works for one out of our 3 dogs. Once they figure out that it only is a quick shock they will keep running through it.

I have it. It's good when it's installed proper. We just had to run all new wire. We also use the stubburn dog collars. I have a husky and a husky lab mix.

So far with the new wire it's working great!!!

I would say you're probably going to be better off with real fencing. First, I don't like the lectric fence because it doesn't keep anything out. Second, the whole principle of the idea is training. You have to train your dog to the perimeter...the shock they get when they get too close is its "correction". Many dogs figure out that the shock only lasts so long if they keep going. In some cases, it can make you dogs scared to come back in after they've gotten out.

Unfortunately, I've heard of more people, including the owner of the pet store I used to work, who had no success with it. (And that was after professional installion and training sessions.) We actually stopped selling it because of the low success rate.

I've seen people use it, but I would say there is a 50% or lower success rate (and that is just in my observation).

Personally, I would rather put up a fence - yes it costs more at first, but it lasts a long time (if you put up a good one), can add to the look of the property if done well, and protects your own pets from unknowns as well.

To be honest, I can't wait until we are no longer renting and can put up a good, quality fence (I'm actually getting tempted to put up a section now and take it back down when we leave).

I would have to say I prefer regular old fashion fencing. I have heard of a stray wondering on someone's property who had electric fencing and their dog was attacked in their own yard!
I have 4 dogs and would only ever trust a true fence for their safety.
