Little dog losing lots of hair?

Hi,
I have a little Chi-Pom and she is losing her hair by the handfuls.
The third week in August she became very sick so off to the vet. We found out she had a uterin infection and became critical within 2 days. Thank-God she pulled thru a spaying that was iffy going into it whether she would even make it thru.
Since she has become a different little dog with so much energy. She eats well and drinks well and seems to have pulled thru very well until the last 2 weeks or so and now this shedding. I thought at first that it was because she was getting ready for winter. Fancy is a house dog but does go outside with us alot. She will be 11 the 3rd of December.
She has shed before but not to where you could pull out bunches between your fingers.
I will call the vet if I have to but after her surgery and spending $800 we are really hoping we dont have to.
Any ideas as to what is going on with my little dog?
Thank you!

The stress of the operation and being sick, coupled with the medications she was on could make her blow her coat.....I would just put her on a fatty acid supplement like Serm Caps or some fish oil caps and see if that helps her out.....

My sheltie did that same thing when she was spayed. Shed out so much I was worried she wouldn't have any hair left at all. With yours being sick and then spayed as well she is most likely just reacting to all the stress.

It could be stress. And it could be seasonal shedding. Mine shed this time of year - seems odd I know since we are coming into winter - but they typically do kind of a 1/2 shed this time of year. Lots of undercoat. Is she is losing guard hairs that would be a different concern and could be from the surgery and stress, if it is just the fluffy undercoat, I wouldn't get too concerned at this point if she were mine.

I'd watch for other signs of illness like dull eyes, loose stools, skin rash, loss of appetite etc. Otherwise I wouldn't worry so much. Antibiotics take a lot out of a little dog and she was one sick puppy. I'd suggest supplements and maybe vitamins.

I'm happy to hear you still have her with you.

My little cairn had that happen. Bloodwork revealed a vitamin/mineral deficiency. She was 10.

I agree with everyone else, sounds like a stress thing. I'm not a vet but if it where me I would keep a VERY CLOSE eye on her. I have my pugs on fish oil caps as they have very dry skin. They love it and it has done wonders for their coats. Might want to give it a try.

Thanks all!
I gave Fancy a bath last night and a god brushing to remove alot more hair. This morning I didnt get hardly any hair off her
I have started her on the fish oil tabs. Should 1 tab a day be sufficient for a 6-7 pound dog?
They are so big so I snipped the end off and squeezed the oil out on food for her.
Also I had changed her brand of food from Chicken Soup to Diamond brand. I will go back to the Chicken Soup where maybe she got more vitamins and nutrients than what she is getting thru the Diamond brand. The feed store said it was a good food and cheaper but maybe the Chicken Soup is better yet and worth the extra it cost me.
Thanks to you all for your replies.

I thought Diamond made Chicken soup dog food? Checked on line and the make up is a little different. So maybe it was the combination that did not agree with your dog.
