| Started | Tobie has a flea Tobie has a flea. He was just at the vet getting his last set of shots, plus he had a dose of heart worm preventative. He is gaining weight nicely at 2.9 pounds. I noticed that he had a flea, only one that I saw. What can I use to get it gone. I hate the thought of more chemicals in him since he just had the shots, heart worm preventative and now this. What is safe to use on this little of a pup? Oh and he is 13 weeks old now.

| Halter broke | Dawn will kill fleas, and get rid of motor oil. It will dry out the coat and skin something fierce though. All the preventives in the world really only work if the flea bites the dog. My vet was also the city pound in Ozark. We used Adams Flea and Tick Shampoo on babies as young as 4 weeks old. Natural Chemistry has a product called DeFlea. All natural, kills on contact. They have a shampoo that I like to use better then the sprays. The sprays leave kind of a residue. http://www.petmountain.com/product/c...ncentrate.html . We carried it at Petco, and I'm not sure where else carries it. I used the heck out of it in the grooming dept where every third dog came in infested with fleas in the spring and summer. For these heavily infested dogs we recomended Frontline every three weeks instead of four. This was also vet recomended. There are a few pills out there like Capstar that knock out fleas. Capstar starts killing within the hour and everything should be dead when it stops working at about 4-6 hours. Last edited by Rhaige9 : 10-04-2009 at 09:55 PM. |

| Started | I just want to make sure I don't overload his system. He was feeling so bad after his shots. Even had a temp for a while and cried everytime he moved. Them he got the heartworm preventative teh next day and was feeling sick for a little while. So hopefully the flea treatment won't make him feel bad too. But I would rather get rid of the fleas then have them make him sick.

| I am not so sure about giving tylenol. Ask your vet. Your pup does not need all those vaccines - especially lepto, and probably not corona. A good flea bath will help, and then perhaps the appropriate topical. You are right to be concerned about all the medications he is getting. I would not do heartworm stuff at this age either, unless you are going to be around alot of mosquitos. For pain, my vet recommends regular aspirin, buffered if possible. Of course it would need to be a very low dose. Really vacuuming and washing anything he comes in contact with will help get rid of the fleas in your home. Not fun! | Soapy water kills fleas. When using a flea comb, keep a bowl of hot soapy water near you, every time you comb if there is a flea, dip the comb into the hot soapy water and it will kill the fleas. And put a flea collar, stretched to activate, in your vacuum cleaner bag so if you suck em up, they do not multiply inside the vacuum bag.

| I live in WI, so not a big problem with fleas up here. My vet recently told me that it is possible to have one flea and not a true infestation, but treatment should still be administered to prevent a larger problem.

| Started | He has very, very short hair since he is a chi, and I only see one flea, no eggs or flea dirt. I am going to bathe him and keep an eye out to see if any more come of it as the winter is coming on and all the fleas freeze so hopefully won't be a problem till the spring.
