Freebie

I couldn't believe my luck today. Now I'm thinking I should have played the lottery. I was checking out craigslist this morning. I've only looked in the free section a few times. I've never been impressed with it so don't give it a thought. When what to my wondering eyes should I see but this little guy. Guess who came home with us today. His name is Rascal. Our son likes it so I guess he gets to keep his name. He is our sons new best friend.

These are his ad pics.

He is a 3 year old sheltie. We can't figure out why they wouldn't want him. Guess with time I'll get to figure that one out as the mans excuse was he has to many dogs. That is one excuse that you'll never hear me use.
I was told he got in a dog fight and has an ear injury so one ear is messed up. It's healed now and it doesn't look like it can be fixed.

I've never owned a sheltie before anyone have any tips on the breed?

He's a very pretty boy, congrats!

Like you, I've never looked in the free section until the other day. I found this guy, talked to hubby, got approval, e-mailed the owner, but never got a response. I was/am so disappointed. It's not often hubby says I can bring home another critter.

Invest in some good grooming tools, like combs and rakes. They can get matted. He looks like a good natured guy. I think Shelties are adorable, and I would not expect them to be fighters. Maybe be a little careful around other dogs until you know what he does. They are usually good learners, so your son could teach him things easily. Congrats on your new friend

A friend of mine rescued one.. great dog.. BAD BARKER.. So you may want to keep an eye on him.. Once he comes outta of the shock of moving home.. WATCH OUT.. they can be neurotic at times.. But great dogs.. VERY VERY VERY SMART.. So start with the training of you are the boss as of 2 hours ago! They need a job to do.. SO time to break out the old dog training trick book- YOUR GONNA Need it.

He looks to be in good shape- at least what I can see from the pics.. So lucky boy has a new home..

you are sooooooooo lucky!!
i adore shelties, just hate the coat care needed....as said before, they are extremely smart, very fast learners, and can be yippy......but, some are not....just curtail the barking right away..
they love to herd, play fetch, do lots of tricks........they are people dogs, and will do anything to get your attention/ affection, and can actually get depressed if ignored too much..
rascal is a PERFECT name...you can see it in his eyes!
OH, I AM SO JEALOUS......you will love him..congrats!

Thanks everyone! It's been just over a week and I still can't see why he was not wanted. We just love him. He's smart that's for sure. Picks up on his commands quick with one exception. He becomes deaf when he's let loose outside. He' ran away a few days ago. We looked everywhere and could not find him. An hour later he nonchalantly walks up from the barn with a look of What! I was so pleased he thinks of this as home and came back. I told my son that he can't be let off leash in an unsecured area until we can get him to come back when called. Anyone got any tips on how I can get him to do that? I've thought of changing his name since he hates hearing Rascal called till one is blue in the face.

Funny thing, when he ran away no one called out his name as we all new it was a waste of breath.

Get a lunge line and a nice juicy HOT DOG.. and evey time he COMES..DONT use his name just COME.. and if he LOOKS at you he gets a treat.. then let him out further and further untill he will come 100% of the time.. NO matter what..

OR instead of a hot dog.. Get a CAN of cat food.. Use an old coffe tin or something.. and Rattle it.. if he comes he gets a treat.. ( dogs LOVE CAT FOOD especially like Kit n Kaboodle.) Rattle can - say come.. if he comes - TREAT.. But that way YOU have a lunge line attached to him but he can still get sortta far a way..
