Arrow Two Year Old Paintaloosa Gelding

Breed: Paintaloosa
Age: 2 (almost 28 months)
Height: 14.1hh
Gender: Gelding
Current Job: Mainly pasture puff, but have done some ground work
Future Intended Use: Trail riding, probably some cattle penning & sorting, and gymkhana
Grady is out of Cheyanne, my Appy mare, and by a Paint stallion (by the way, that was Grady 2 years ago in my avatar !)

Note: I had a hard time getting good photos of his hind end, where he looks nice and straight, so included 2 that show one of each leg kind of being okay . Sorry they're not the greatest. Also very hard to get a good side photo of him with all 4 legs on the ground, he's pretty laid back. I hope these will do for a decent conformation critique!

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

Here are a couple more from this spring, while Grady was going through a huge growth spurt. He's a bit thin, but they might show a little more since he's not chubby like he is normally ???

Overall he's a nice looking gelding. Looks balanced, pretty head. Legs look straight, good bone. I like the length of his back, and has a decent shoulder. He just needs to be uh "toned up" and clean up that neck and he'll look awesome.

Wow he is a good looking boy. He;s got great bone, and flashy markings. With some riding muscle, he'll stop people in their path!

Nice looking little using gelding. Has that Ranch Horse look about him.

What I see confirmationally:

Nice wide set to his eyes, upright attentive but relaxed ears. I see a strong thick jaw, that sits a bit tight to his throatlatch. Some work for muscling and thinning along the neck in general should help. I do however find his head set a bit on the high side, meaning tight at the top of the pole. Not bad, fits his breeding. Good size and shape to his neck, would like to see a bit more length as he grows. Nice working horse high tie in at the chest. Good size withers, with a short coupled back that fits his frame. Nice deep heartgirth and underline. In a few pictures he looks a tad goose rumped, but in some he doesn't, so I think it is age and with work will round out his muscles. Good set to his croup. Nice big round powerful hip, I would like to see a more rangey stifle and as he grows he may lengthen out. His shoulder is a tad upright, but again evidence of breeding. I like given his body size and structure his neck tie in....it places center of the side of his hip and shoulder.
He quarters well...meaning head & neck, shoulder/withers, mid section and then hip.

He has great bone for his size, his legs are short coupled but show power. He is nice and straight down the midline in front, but I do see he turns out slightly on his front left. Good angle to his front pasterns...would like to see a little more heel however.

His hip again shows power, again good short bone coupling. Good set to his hocks. I do find him slowly cowhocked, but what good ranch horse isn't.
Again good angle to his rear pasterns, and would like a little more rear heel as well.

I still think this boy has some blooming to do and will be interesting in revisiting this next summer. All in all a nice looking guy. I think he will do well for what you have planned for him. A personal note, I would like to see him about 40 pounds lighter, I think it would add to a much leaner, well conformed 2 year old.

Thank you, very helpful info

His Momma was a late bloomer, and I think you very well may be right about Grady! I know he'd look better with a bit less "fluff" on his frame, but all of my horses are fat ! I have them in a dry lot all day long and turn them out to eat at night time, but they're still all, ummm... very easy keepers . I'd hate to see how bad they'd be if they were out 24/7 !

Hard to pick this guy apart. For two and just hanging out in the pasture he looks great. I don't think he is over weight, just nice for being unemployed I love his shoulder, hip and shoulder angles appear to line up well. A little lacking in the hip I though.
Typical lazy colt can't stand on all fours at the same time Nice neck, good withers, he is slightly cow hocked. But he is also low hocked which is desirable in cow horse/reining disciplines. His tail set seems to be a tad low, which I don't care for. But the more I look it could just be someof the pics. Like I said hard to pics apart he is a nice colt.

Thanks! I'm not sure about his tail.... hmmm, I should really get a couple better, squared up hind end photos! I wonder if his tail looks low in some of the photos because he has his hip dropped in most of them?

ETA: I'll get some after my farrier comes out, which is supposed to be on Wednesday (he hurt his back - farrier, not Grady ). But if anyone else would like to critique in the meantime, go right ahead

Amazing looking horse. Lovely tone of color.

The only "bad" things I see are that, to me, he looks like he ties in low where his neck and chest meet, and he's a bit flat backed. I prefer to see a little bit more of a "dip" from his withers to about mid-back. Just a little more something for a saddle to sit and grip.

Other than that he's absolutely stunning. Nice hips, shoulders, legs, and head. He's going to be a good one regardless.

From what I can tell- and I'm not very good at this, but trying to learn- I agree with the person who said his back looks flat... seems like e should ahve a little more of a dip... and his hips/rump look a little weak to me, but it might be because he hasn't been worked at all. I think his shoulder angle looks good, neck could tie in a tad bit higher. But I think he looks like a nice solid horse, and he has a look about him that he'd be quiet and easy to train.
