teenage Appaloosa mare

Breed: Appaloosa
Age: mid teens
Gender: mare
Height: 14hh

Horse's current job and future intended uses: just being started u/s, most likely she'll be a jack of all trades, master of none. If she does take to a certain event, we'll go in that direction.

Additional Information: Product of BYB, and malnutrition. Dam was 16hh, sire 15.2hh. As far as I know none of her immediate family has anything to boast about. My contact named Joker B, Three Bars, and Native Dancer as her breeding... I think its pretty self explanatory.

Photo's!

These are obviously old photos, taken in April.

How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

I like her.

Her legs look straight and correct, her neck is proportionate with her body, and she has some good muscle. She'd look really great with a few more pounds of muscle.

Ohhhhh, I like her too. Is she registered? She looks in her 1st picture like a natural athlete, like she could really scat too. I honestly like the way she's put together, look at that hip . OK, If I was picky (I'm not ) in some pics her back looks a tad long, I like more withers, a bit thick in the throatlatch (so what , says I) butt-high with a steep croup and maybe more slope to her shoulder. I love her neck, length and placement, love her legs, pretty, attentive face, and awesome color. I love her length at the trot for a little horse. She's got some very "blue" blood with the 3 sires you list, all brilliant. She looks like a nice, solid girl that I, personally, would be proud to own, and I suspect will be a lot of fun to ride.

I think the way she carries herself on those small circles speaks worlds for her conformation. She looks wonderfully balanced at the trot. Especially for a horse that's not been worked with. Her neck has a good shape, ties into her body very nicely, and her shoulder has an excellent slope. I like her solid butt, but she is camped out in back a little.

Overall, she looks to be a well-balanced horse. From the looks of it, she will be able to perform up to your expectations without a problem.

As for the mare's confirmation...She's really cute, nice hip, pretty head, nice big eye. Ties well--I like her.

EDITED: Please pm anything that isn't conformation related to the OP. Thanks

She's long in the back, too narrow through the chest, and maybe just a touch butt high.

She has a really nice face and looks like she'd be a fun horse...and she's the perfect size!

Now Im curious.

Thanks everyone, I wasnt expecting such positive comments! I personally can see where the neglect took its toll when she was younger, however I do like her build.

She does not have papers, however both her parents did. Getting papers on her now isnt possible though since her sire has passed. I may register her with IQPA (Quarter Pony). I had already assumed she was running bred just by her build, when that was confirmed I was happy. Sadly she doesnt show a ton of speed out in the pasture. She tends to run with her head up in the air and quite a bit of knee action.

She does have a good natural balance, and she knows where her feet are. Though at the same time our biggest problems relate to balance. With a rider she comes unglued if she feels offbalance. Its going to take time for her to get her bearings with a rider, I just hope she doesnt hurt anyone in the process(aka me, since I wont let anyone else get on her yet ).

I'm new to the whole conformation thing, but trying to learn... something about the right front knee looks pretty off to me, anyone else notice it?

Looks a little long in the back to me, and lighter body frame, looks more Arabian to me... but maybe that's because of the running lines? Are they bred lighter like that?

She looks like she moves really nicely though. Love the third lungeing pic of her cantering.

She has an old injury to her knee. Its a knot that doesnt affect her.

I was given pictures of her dam(as a baby), and her two grandmothers yesterday. Its amazing the resemblance between the 4 horses.

I also got some papers... Shes actually race and halter bred.
