How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

I would like to say she has nicely muscled behind. She's got a haybelly (so do mine). I like her chest which looks nice and broad. I wish I could see more of her face, I like to see the horses eyes and shape of head. Once she's muscled out everywhere she'll be a very nice mare.

Her butt could be phenominal with some work - she has really nice hindquarters.

I don't think that her topline could use a lot of change. She looks good! I want to see her with some riding muscle, I bet that she'd be breathtaking.

Other then that, she looks straight and correct and has the cutest little head. I'm jealous!

shes got a weak back end for an eventing prospect. her point of hip/point of butt line is shallow, which is fine if she were an arab with a short flat croup but shes not shes a tb with what is suposed to be a triangular croup configuaration.

this will make it difficult for her to collect and difficult for her to work off her back end. its like her whole pelvis is tipped the wrong way.

to see this illustrated, look here.

http://bp1.blogger.com/_IS6u0pZVIIQ/...1600-h/hip.JPG

she almost looks like she got a hunters bump from using that back end but that could be the lack of top line muslce.

her neck also ties in a bit low for a jumper. and shes weak loined.

shes got nice clean legs and is balanced okay. shes got nice big feet and a nice deep heart girth.

I don't believe that her topline is bad. However, I believe her neck ties in a little low, her thoralatch could be cleaner. I don't think her pastern angles match with her shoulder angles. She isn't correctly turned over the croup (should have more slope) and subsiqently has too high of a tailset. She does have a nice rear, but I think she's a little wide. She has nice deep hocks, but I would love to see more balanced muscling throughout, but that will come with time under saddle.

She is pretty. What I see is a bug hay belly that will tuck up with time and mileage. Form e she is a bit base wide. Her shoulder ties in ok for me, and the rump is fine with a nicely defined strong hindquarte, All in all I think she will be fine for the job you want from her.

I just want to clairify, it isn't a HAY belly really. It is a mix of hay belly and foal belly. She has just been weaned from her foal this weekend. She is already losing the hay belly look a bit just from 4 days of solid work since she was moved.

Thanks again guys
