5 y/o Arabian mare

Breed: Arabian
Age: 5
Gender:Mare
Height: 14.2 or so
Horse's current job and future intended uses: Right now we are working on just basic riding and keeping her mind focused. I eventually want to do some jumping and gymkhana. I hope she will develop into a well rounded horse that can do from english to western, shows to cattle drives -- a jack of all trades master of none!
Additional Information: When I bought this horse she had a lot of problems dealing with new situations and sounds and has come a long way in the last couple of months! I can now take her somewhere and when she comes off the trailer can usually trust she will stand and lookund not drag me away from every horse eating monster that lurks outside the trailer!

I tried to get her to look forward for the pictures but being that I was doing them myself it was the best I could do!

How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

She seems like a nice all around prospect. She has a rather skinny neck, but that might be the arab in herI like her legs, and she seems like she should be a nice sound horse. She has the sweetest eyes!

I like her! I took one look and thought 'polish breeding'...then saw her pedigree and no wonder she reminds me of the Arab gelding I had. ALL those Sheila Varian stallions!
I'm not good at the 'wording' for a conformation critique but she looks very balanced to the eye. In other words she looks like her conformation could tackle any discipline you ask her to do. The horse will let you know through training/experiences together what they will excel at.
I had a wonderful Arab gelding that was just so bored with me! He has a mind that needs to be busy and all I wanted to do was an occasional trail ride. I gave him to my sister in NC and she gives lessons and has taken him on an endurance ride and competitive trail...he is very happy now!!

Nice head and neck- her neck should loose that thin look with topline work; good shoulder angle; a bit long in the back and weak in the loins. Could have a longer croup and a larger hip. Appears to be bench kneed and sickle hocked.

Beautiful expression- I love the way she's always looking at you!

She is a really funny horse when it comes to being by herself! She is soaked with sweat the minute she can't see another horse OR human. When she is alone I can go in there and she runs up to you and it is like she is saying "OMG I can't believe you left me here all by myself with no one, don't you know I was worried sick that I was by myself but it is all good now because you came back!" She is very frantic but as long as you are there (with or without another horse) she is very relieved! She is happy with just me! We have been working a long time to get that whoa where she will stand in one place before she would just follow me around so she was always facing me ha!

Typical Arab. They can't bear not to know what you are doing so the face is always pointed at the camera. She has good length of neck without being a giraffe, really sweet face. Her hip conformation may not be the current show ring style but her hip line will give her more ability to move in the different areas that you want than some of the "flat toplines". All in all for a riding horse she should show beautifully under saddle and it sounds like she has already bonded and is ready to learn and grow.

She is very rough to ride at the trot, but has a nice lope would her conformation have anything to do with that or will it improve with more training? I thought my QH was a paint shaker but this one she takes the cake! It looks really pretty on the lunge line all lofty and such but not so pretty when you ride it!

Yes, I had a polish arabian with a prancy hard to ride trot. He could run though, and had a wonderful canter. It has to do with their confirmation.

Your mare looks Polish bred, with the not so straight topline and different head. I like the eye on her, and, personally, prefer the Polish temperments. She looks like a a sweet heart

What is bench kneed? Shel looks a bit sickle hocked but I think that could have more to do with trimming than her actual confirmation. We just moved and had to use a different farrier and I don't think she was quite that bad when my old farrier did her. Anything I can do to strenghthen her loin?

Ok just googled bench kneed and that describes her, she does have an old splint on her right leg right by the knee!

The arabian I lease has a vey bouncy extended trot, but his western jog is phenomenal... as slow as a walk, very easy to sit.

I personally love the fact that she wouldn't take her eyes off you... I'm not expert, but I think that overall she's very nice looking... as someone else said, looks balanced.

I like her.

She is a bit bench kneed, but I got one as well. Hopefully she grows out of it. LOL
I'd like to see just a bit of a bigger hip on her, that'll come up with more being worked.
Being cow hocked is something almost expected in a Arabian, and actually I perfer mine to be a bit so.
Her top line could use a bit of conditioning, but again, that'll come with collection and roundness with riding.

She's got a lovely head. The distance from her eye to her nostrils is good, good width between her eyes, good sized nostrils with a nice sized muzzle (Not too small, not too big). She's also got a really nice tail set.

I'm thinking the picture quailty really doesn't show how pretty she is (aside from the last head shot).
I've got a few Bay El Bey, Bey Abi, Khemosabi, Bask bred horses.
