Yearling APHA colt

Breed: APHA
Age: 15 months
Gender: Colt
Height: 14.1HH
Intended use: These pics are of him in pastern condition. He has all of his ground manners and we have just started lounging him to build his mussels up. We intend to show him in an APHA show this winter in halter and in hand trail. His future will hopefully be as a reining horse. I am wondering if you all think he could be stallion quality eventually? His papers are currently pending but, if you want to know his bloodlines here are his parents names. they are on all breedpedigree. Maxs Royal Taffy, sire Black Hills Buckeye

Here is Renegade

How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

Wow he is a cowy boy..

I will give it somewhat of a shot..... He is beautifully colored and has a nice Build on him. He is a big boy, with a big hip, good bone and a big butt. His head is a little small for my taste, but that is me. It could be that his neck is shorter than it should be in comparison to his body. It looks overly small compared to his shoulder. I would hate to really nit pick because he is a baby and still has a good bit of growing to do. All in all he is a very nice well built baby.

overall I quite like your boy!! he has a cute head, decent substance/muscle definition to him for his age.Short backed, great bone to him & flashy coloring. His biggest drawback for me is his neck,it is thick & would like to see a cleaner throatlatch on him.He is going to get alot huskier & his neck{particularily if you keep him a stud} is going to get coarser.

In response to your question, I'm sorry, but I don't believe he should be a stud.

My main reasons for this are his bench knees and his kneck. He also appears to be sickle hocked. Bench knees cause a horse's legs to eventually break down. As others have said, his neck/throatlatch are coarse and attachment to the withers could be better. His shoulder angle is also quite steep.

Apart from that, he has a nice short back and a good hind end. He would make a cute gelding, but too much strain should not be put on his legs. He's a cute guy!

As a reining prospect it will depend on what level you are looking at. From what I see in these pictures his pasturns are too straight he is high hocked and is gaskins look a bet week but get better with age and work. However it will be hard to keep him sound with the the other issues.

His shoulder is quite straight and will make it hard for him to turn. He has a nice hip and he looks like he has a nice back. In one picture his neck seems odd and high and in anouther not so bad so I am going to say that more pictures are needed for that.

His front end looks OK. His legs and shoulder are set well however it looks like he may turn out but may just be the picture or the way he is standing.

With all that said I would like to see him leged up and a year older. Some of the issues may be age related and will work themselves out. Will just depend on how much you like him and if you are willing to take the chance that they will. Again that is if you are looking for a reiner.

I would think if you are looking for a rider and perhaps local shows he should be nice for that.
