How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

This is definetly my favorite out of the two you posted.

She has a sweet eye, nice head, good shoulder, well balanced looking with good muscle for a youngster, and finishes it all off with that georgous booty.... I think she is going to be a fine animal when she's finished

She is put together very nicely. I always look at them in 3rds.
Her neck ties into her shoulder nicely, nice level topline, real pretty eye and expression. Legs look good, nice and straight, with slight angle in her hocks.
I like her!! Redboy

PS. What's her breeding?

Redboy, some of her breeding is up with the description, but her sire is by Playin In Lightnin, a ncha earner by Playgun and out of a $ earning daughter of Doc O Lena. Her sire's dam is by Mr Freckles O Lena (Colonel Freckles, Doc O Lena) and out of a daughter of Doc's Hickory.
Her dam is a Dolls Union Jac granddaughter who has been shown at open shows very successfully and been used in 4-H.
She has a great mind and is super to work with.

Again this one has a nice hip and tail set she should get under herself well. She is better proportioned then the other filly. I think it is the picture but something about the neck and head I do not like. Seems short and aucward to me. Again my be the picture or angle. Would like to see more conformation shots to really see.

Again over all she should make a nice mount and be handy. As yearling though they can be desieving depending on grouth sperts and such.

Nice hip, pretty head. I like the breeding as well. (She looks like our Playgun grandson).

The only flaws I can see from these pictures are a straight shoulder, long-ish back, and a thick throatlatch. She has a nice motor and substance. Though I can't judge the legs very well from these photos, nothing sticks out as "wrong" to me. She has a pretty face!
