Question 3 Month Old Conformation..

NAME: Dixon's Red Hot Ember
BREED: APHA Reg. Paint
AGE: 3 months, 2 days
CURRENT JOB: Preparing for her first Futurity Halter Class show
INTENDED USE: Continue through the Yearling Halter and into reining, personal enjoyment riding.

This has to be my most favorite filly I had hands in from beginning through to now, and so on. I love the coloring and her dual ice blue eyes. Looking at her conformationally, she developed fast and was able to be weaned at 2 months in preparation for the upcoming show. She eats solid and heavily, and has been very healthy. Mom is an Overo Paint who throws wonderful babies. Breeding was with another magnificent Paint who sire's fast off spring. My filly has excellent blood lines, and her potential in picking up the training quickly and eagerly has made her wonderful to work with. Here are some pics, let me know what you expect and see!

How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

This is true! Thats one reason I was hoping to get outside input! Being the owner and one that puts the effort in, it is hard to accurately and non biasely place a critical eye! LOL! I know being young has a variation as they age, so getting some other views...!

Is this a filly or colt Colt is a male, Filly is a female. You mention colt and then filly. Besides that, he or she looks to have nice very long legs. Just need to get her fit and a little more muscled as I see a little belly and in need of muscle/weight in the chest area and hip area. Cute baby though.

I noticed the clubby foot as well, but wasnt sure if it was just me. I have a clubby, so I look at the hooves first for some reason

LOL, My appologies... Philly.. My mind is racing a 100mph with getting her going and ready for her first upcoming show! So many things to do, and it almost seems last minute!

More belly muscle? Awesome! Thank you very much! I will have to get that worked on! I have been pearing at her quite a bit and wondered if she needed more bulk, but not in fat wise. Her mom is quite bulky, but dad is much more lean and racey, so I am hoping to find that healthy medium! LOL!

She needs to be fitted as in getting RID of the little pot belly. As a horse gets fit for showing, the belly will look more streamlined and not saggy like a hay belly. What kind of futurity are you showing her in? Halter or lunge line? Do you have a link to her pedigree?

Thats why I was wondering what kind of Futurity there is for a 3 month old. I dont really see halter horse in this cute little filly and I have only heard of yearling lungeline.

Showing APHA futurity, pinto or open?? If APHA This baby has eye appeal but probably not enough natural bulk & muscle definition as alot of the babies that will be showing at a halter futurity. She is in pasture type condition needs weight & fitting that will make a big change in her, help give her more bulk & muscle definition & trim up any belly. She also still has her baby coat she needs to be shed out & slick if you can before show time or you should look at body clipping her.She probably won't be too tuff as a halter baby but as a yearling could see her make a nicer looking longeliner.

JMo, 2 months is way to early. Unless it's a medical issue.

Ditto.

It is just so hard to judge these little guys. Things can change so much as they age, I often forget that there is even classes for them this young.
I really don't see a club foot....

Yes, she will be shown in Halter class and she is a registered Paint with APHA!

As for that belly line, so correct. The more I look, the less I am content with it. I have already started her in the round pen, as well as the long walks we take. Hopefully with just under a month left, a difference can be made. On an average I work her around four hours a day, four days a week, and two hours on the rest. I have also been attacking her with the slicker brush to get that baby coat under control. I have also changed the grain she is on to a higher protien to help with that. So with a good diet and more exercise I am interested to see how much improvement will happen prior to showing!

I will find the link to her bloodlines and get that posted!

I have fitted quite a few halter babies and show futurities over the years and I never lunge them or put them in a round pen. Teach them to trot behind a tractor or anouther horse round pens will mess up their young legs. Adding protien be very carful not to get them growing too fast and causing appifisites (SP).

This filly is not going to have the musle mass needed to really compet in weanling futurities especially if they do not split the class she is just too young. You will be competing with foals that are a good 6-7 months older. I would show her for the experiance and work on things that will make her competative next year. She looks like she will make a very nice lungeliner next year.

I really love her coloring and her markings.

She definitely needs to bulk up a little bit to be a top competitor, but other then that she looks like a very well put together baby.

I can only imagine what she'll look like at 3! She'll be stunning.

JMO................but I really do not see what the point is of showing a baby so young. She has a belly but at the same time is ribby, she is a little out of proportion from growing. She has nice color, but I prefer to let them grow with their moms the way nature intended, no amount of feed no matter how good in quality can substitute what she would gain from her mother. But, good luck with her, she is cute.
