How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

Good lookin boy...have you ridden him? He seems pretty straight in his shoulder line and his neck looks a bit short but it could be the way he's holding it up or the fact that he is pretty cresty and thick in the throatlatch. He does look like a good all around horse - just concerned with his smoothness of movement with his shoulders. But hey, what do I know - I'd buy anything with four legs if I fell in love with it! To me, that's 3/4 of it...

He does ride, He's actually very quick, catty... moves off his hindend well.

The littles change in your seat and he will turn out from underneath of you... He is actually cutting horse bred.

He was left a stallion until he was 5 years old, but was never bred. He's a very "serious" horse... Will work hard all day long, and as soon as a saddle is on "it's work time" in his eyes... He's not the average "goofball" horse if that makes sense....

He seems a little camped under, but thats ok for certain disciplines. He's got a super thick neck and throat, and is a little downhill.

Sounds like a great horse, I love the ones that know what the saddle means and don't fight it.

I think he is a great looking guy, and sounds like he really knows his business, but I have to tell you, he can't be yours, so I will be to pick him up soon. I love the looks of him, very majestic looking, proud standing.

Thank you all!

What I'm really wondering about... Some people have siad... such and such in the legs looks like horse will have soundness issues in the future (this was in different confo. threads about other horses...) I really want to know if anyone sees any issues that make cause soundness issues with him later on ...

Thanks

Cascy, thie only thing I could even see is were they talking about his pasterns(sp). Really even them that is something that is going to be unknown. Other than that I see no issue..and really not a big issue there. Do you have a pic of him walking, maybe they see him sitting down to far on the pasterns when walking.
