How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

He looks a little cowhocked, and he looks a little butt high. He has the same withers as my horse Rocket, a little high and sloping which causes some saddle fitting problems that riser pads can help with.

But I think that he is stunning. He has a nice big chest and big butt, which I just love. And his coloring is fantastic, he is a true golden palomino. He has a very pretty head, and a soft eye.

I think He's very pretty and well put up. I love that he has big muscled hind quarters. Nice low head, And pretty color, Great tail, nice soft face.
Only thing I would like to see is a thicker wider chest to match the rear.

Right front hoof looks "flat" compaired to the left hoof. Not sure what you call something like that. Love his color and kind face.

I think he is quite nice and he is appealing to the eye. A little off in those hind hocks maybe and I also wonder what is up with the right front leg/hoof? Maybe he is just standing funny? His right leg looks like it turns out a bit...

Agree. I think his toes look a bit long and maybe that's why his hooves look funny to some people. Also appears a bit downhill.

I too find him to be butt/hock high. He has a nice shoulder and good heart girth. Just a tad thick in the throat latch, but just a tad not bad. Steep croup but he is camped out underneath so it's hard to tell if that is true or not. His pasterns are long with to much slope for my taste. He has a nice short back and big hip. His left front hoof is unbalanced, and his right front is turned out. From the back, his hip is very crooked, like he is resting his leg but is not.

I don't know what it is with him, but I've had the vet and chiro. look at him. He stands with his legs in a mess! He never stands square unless I'm holding him. And as soon as I squared him up and stepped aside to take a photograph, he'd shift his weight and try to crawl towards me.
