How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

Oh my gosh! He is the 2nd cutest foal I've ever seen! (The cutest foal I've ever seen is mine. ) I absolutely love him! Conformationally, it's hard to critique them when their that young. But he does look very nice.

My knowledge when it comes to arabs is ... well... lacking

He's got a pretty face and a sweet, curious eye, I'd like a little more defined jaw area, but that could be a growing thing...

Also might be the picture but it looks like he's toe'd out on front and back

Oh he is a beauty. Very well put together fella. He seems to have a wow factor about him right now. Beautifully dished face, nice bone and a soft eye. At this stage in the game, I would definatly say he is worth keeping a stud prospect.

As hard as it is to critique foals, I think this little guy shows a lot of potential for his age. I love the dished face, he really has a gorgeous head.

Very dishy head, nice angles to the hip and shoulder... Nice large eye.

I agree on the appearance of being toed out, more so in the hind than the front. The far hind seems worse than the near hind, perhaps he was standing funny?

Also appears that he's over at the knee a little... But he could still grow out of that.

I'm a big fan of Arab foals, and this one is a cutie.

Thank you everyone for your comments. This colt really blows my mind because he's the best one I've ever bred. He does toe out in the back. All of mine do and that is very common in the breed. Arabs just wouldn't travel the same if they were straight, straight in the back.

I know it is hard to judge on the young ones like this, especially in the legs because they are changing so much. In the front it's a little more of a base wide type deal then the toeing out but still he has a lot of growing to do and may grow out of that. He was over in the knee when born and it has taken a long time for that to grow out. None of the horses in his pedigree are like that though. Sire has excellent legs. My mare has good legs but has her faults. She is still an exceptional ride and very comfortable to ride.

I still don't know yet what I want to do with him. I've never wanted a stallion but I may end up stuck with one if he turns out too nice to geld. Time will tell.
