What do ya'll think of her?

Breed: APHA
Age: 17
Gender: mare
Height: 16 hh
Uses For: Used only for trail riding, and to teach beginners to ride. She is bery patient for that. I would like to try my had at halter showing. I think she would do well at the local shows here.

How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

Well, I was going to say she was built slightly uphill, but then the next picture makes her looks downhill, so I'm going to say it's probably just the angle Other then that she appears to have nice legs, and a feminine head(I personally really love that look) Her eye is sweet and she's got a nice lip, which I also use to determine temperment, and she looks rather nice! I think she should do well in local halter classes!

Isn't she a sweetie!! And, such a big girl.... 16hh. She has a nice feminine neck with ears set on well and a pleasant head. Her front legs set a bit forward from the center line of her shoulder which gives her the appearance of not being quite "under" herself. She has nice depth to her heart girth - her tummy could perhaps be a little more tucked up.... more afalfa and less prairie-types will create less tummy 'bulk' (but hey... she's 17. She looks great for her age!). I'd prefer to see a little more depth in the hip when viewed in profile, and she appears to splay out slightly in the rear. but, all in all, she's a pleasant looking mare that appears well suited for your purpose. Take her out and enjoy!!!!

Since I am dealing with a hoof handicapped horse right now I tend to notice them first. Her hooves look underrun to me, the angle does not look right.

I know that it is conformation that can be fixed, but do halter judges look at that sort of them?

I also noticed her feet but don't know if that's paid attention to in halter classes either.

Otherwise she's built quite nicely, nice neck and pretty nice leg confirmation. I would think she'd do okay in halter shows too.

Yeah I do think that a halter judge would look at them and they don't look great right now. The shoer is due this week. Her hooves grow soooo fast its unbelievable. She is on a strict 6 week shoe schedule. no exceptions...I could tell you a bigl ong sad story of how I got her but basically 3 years ago she was on her way to the slaughter house becuase of her feet and I bought her from them for what they would have gotten for her weight at the kill house. She litterally couldn't walk when I got her, she just bounced...she had foundered 8 years before that and was left in the pasture with no care at all, no human contact. She sure had come a long way to say the least, but her feet have always been problematic, but I found a shoer that specializes in corrective shoeing and since he has been coming out he has done wonders...it will always be a challenge for us though por girl and all she has been thtough in her life. She'll die a happy horse with me though...she has my heart.

the first 2 pics look like completely different horses. the first picture she looks nice and has pretty nice confo. But then I look at pic #2 and I see a not very attractive horse

In pic 1 everything looks to flow together very nicely only thing that really stands out is she seems to have underrun heels

pic 2 nothing seems to flow nicely together and she looks to have a pretty striaght shoulder plain boring head, her head and neck look like they belong on 2 differnt horses, her back and her hip looks funky. Her muzzle also in that pic looks almost as thick as the top of her head. and underrun heels.

I see what you are saying. I'm not sure if its maybe because she is under a tree in the 2nd pic and its creating shadows on her. I was trying to find an even spot. Her muzzle does look incredibly large but its really not. You can really see her a lot better in the 1st picutre.
