Arrow 8 y/o TB Gelding

Breed: Thoroughbred
Age: 8
Gender: Gelding
Height: 16.1
Registered: Jockey Club *Taz Diablo* http://www.pedigreequery.com/taz+diablo

His current job is getting weight and muscle on.. He's also learning the barrel pattern and doing very well. Future uses are trail riding and competitive barrel racing, he's showing a lot of promise for that.
He was malnourished when I got him about 2 1/2 months ago.. It has been he** to get weight on him. Very hard keeper. We've tried everything from different feeds, to beet pulp and weight builder supplements. Right now we're feeding Strategy 2x day and he is on free range coastal we're also going to start adding corn oil to his feed. He is utd on shots, teeth, and worming. So we've ruled all that out, but he is still WAY to skinny IMO. I know he is a TB and that breed never gets extremely stocky like QH's. This is my first TB, I've only owned QH's so he is a little new to me. Please let me know what you think of him. Again I know he is very lean and skinny and needs more muscle especially up front in his pecs and shoulders. BTW his tail is short b/c his previous owners decided it'd be easier to whack it off rather than detangle it Ok, here is BO.

REALLY Skinny up front..

If you have comments you don't want to put on here, please feel free to PM me..I'm open to hear everything.

He is nice looking. I'm not much of a confo person so I won't even start on that. But he looks good, does need weight as stated. Have you tried Nutrena safechoice or even a senior feed for him? I've always had good luck trying to stick to basics rather than pumping lots of different products into them. Hay and 1 good grain and that's it! Good luck!

I am not much of a conformation guru, but he has a gorgeous color, and is looking pretty good!!
Although personally, i find it really hard to judge any conformation, as it will change and balance more when he bulks up a little. I have a friend whos horse looked almost the same as that(but chestnut) when she got him almost a year ago. Right now (even though he went through some horrible strangles earlier this year) his body has changed SO MUCH, and he is looking very good!
Dont try for instantanious weight gain, it takes time..

What a lovey girl you've got there! Bless your heart for taking her in.

My Percy was very difficult in keeping his weight on. I tried just about everything under the sun but found Ultium (by Purina) worked wonders. It's a bit more expensive, but you feed less of it. He blossomed with it.

You may want to try some of that or maybe some flax seed. I've heard that will help put on weight. So will TizWiz, but I've not had luck with either of those.

Good luck with your pretty girl.

OOOPS -- My bad -- you have a very handsome

Hi there! What a cute horse you have! Typical skinny TB, I have one of those too! I feed her beet pulp, step 8 hi-fat (its supposed to be for stallions but works great!) and some oil.
Did he ever race? His hocks and back ankles seem a bit off and I knew a horse that raced and would almost twist his back feet with each step to keep the weight off his hocks. He was otherwise sound though, just looked like he was sashay-ing around the arena
Otherwise maybe he is just a bit toed in at the back and its an odd picture angle! I love the colour of his tail! Even if it is short!

I'm no good at conformation either... the one thing that sticks out to me is his left hind leg looks like it toes in a bit. His muscling is very uneven right now, so I think it gives him kind of a gawky look but once her puts on muscle should even out some. I mean, I think his bone structure basically looks good, just like you said, need a bit of weight. Nice color, and he has a very sweet face. Looks very laid back.

It does toe in a bit and the farrier is also working on reshaping his back hooves b/c they both kind of toe in. His hooves were very brittle and breaking so he was shifting all his weight on the sides of his hooves and it was growing and sweeping in on the inside. So he is currently getting Farrier's Formula Biotin to help with his hooves!
He is unbelievably laid back and he follows me where ever I go! He's a big sweetheart. Thanks for your input

Can I just mention that Tango is a very stocky, strong TB (although you can still see rib outlines a little bit when he's running around)? They can get that sort of 'bulky' look to them, but I'll bet it's more genetics than anything else. However, don't think they can't be wide as well as tall...'cause Tango sure is.

Good looking boy you've got there...some farrier work and TLC will bring him round. I know nothing about conformation, but he looks like he's got a sweet and intelligent eye.

Best-
Noni

What a looker you've got there

Honestly, I don't feel comfortable giving him a full critique off those pictures. You can really tell he needs some good farrier work, as he looks footsore in those pictures.

I don't want to say, "Oh your horse is camped out and toes out behind," because I have a feeling he doesn't naturally stand like he does in these pictures, due to either being footsore, being undermuscled or just not set up properly I'd LOVE to see some pictures of him when he has more weight on...he's a NICE looking horse.

As for getting weight on...Nothing has ever worked better for me than fortified/stabilized rice bran, BOSS, and corn oil Even for TBs! Also not quite as expensive as some of the other methods.

Good luck!

Thank you for all the positive comments! He does need more weight and I feel good about his muscling, but I'm sure w/ more weight gain it'll all even out! He is a good looking boy and so sweet. I plan on keeping him around for a long time. I will post updated pics in the months to come when he starts progressing and gaining more weight.
