How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

First off, I really like her. She has a very pleasing overall appearance. Fairly straight legs, maybe toes out a little. She's build a bit downhill too. I'd like to see her neck tie in just a smidgen higher, and a more feminine shaped head.
I like the length of her neck, well set hocks, short back, prominent shoulder and good muscle, good length of the heartgirth and a really great butt! Nice looking mare! She looks like she could be pretty versatile. From the pics and her build she looks much taller than 14.1/14.2.

Now that's a cow horse, and I agree with the previous poster about her size...had to go back and look at height because she does look bigger than she is. With that being said, this is what I see.....

Nice head with really wide eyes(a good thing), her heads doesn't scream mare but fits her. Nice attentive ears, good headset at poll, maybe a bit thick in the throatlatch. Love her neck, good size, shape and length, that ties in well to her body and fits her build. Decent withers, short strong coupled back with a nice deep heartgirth. Big powerful round hip with a good set to her croup. I think it is where she is standing cause she to me looks even, not butt high. Good shoulder angulation, shows reaching ability. Legs are straight, good size bone and are clean. Nice pastern size and angle, with a good size hoof. Toes out ever so slightly up front. Nice deep reaching stifle, again shows reach ability, with a fairly slight upright hock. Good clean bone and again good size and angled pasterns with a good hoof. I do find her slightly cow hocked as well. Over all, I really like this girl. She should be able to do what you have planned. What a good using horse in my opinion looks like...If she was about a hand or two higher, you may have to go looking for her in my pasture.

I, too, really like this mare. She is very pleasing to the eye with good balance. My thoughts echo the previous posters, she is very slighly splay-footed in both the front and back. She has a nice clean head and neck with a good deep heart girth. I would like to see a deeper, bigger hip on her (when looking at her in profile). Although her hip is very nice and deep from the rear and quarter-rear shots. (Thank you for braiding her tail - black horses are so hard to see!!!) She is certainly well-suited to your plans for her. I bet you get a lot of compliments on her. She is overall a very balanced and eye-pleasing mare.

Thank you to all,

This is her pasture condition, so I know her hips are pretty underdeveloped. The big belly doesn't help matters. :P

I really like her. She is a slight bit toed out, but in my book is no big deal as long as she travels well and does a good job. Not really any other faults to me. A really nice mare. Nice as she is, but if she were in competition shape - WOW.

I can not add anything. They have covered it very well - that is a beautiful mare...
